*This is a Grade & Step position, and the first 10 Steps of pay are advertised. Typical starting pay will be at the beginning of the range, depending on qualifications.*
Primary Purpose
Assists in the maintenance of City grounds, inclusive of parks, greenway areas, City-owned landscaped areas, and the grounds surrounding municipal facilities.
Supervision
Under the direct supervision of the Parks Maintenance Superintendents.
- Works as a member of a crew to perform the general beautification, cleaning, upkeep, and maintenance of city parks, greenway areas, city owned landscaped areas, and the grounds surrounding municipal buildings inclusive of mowing, trimming, tree care, landscaping, trash removal, painting, cleaning, etc.
- Assists with park renovation projects and park development projects.
- Assists Parks and Recreation Department during times of special events.
- Operates equipment such as hand and power tools in a manner consistent with safety principles.
- Operates light duty maintenance equipment such as a zero-turn mower and a tractor equipped with front end loader.
- Maintains, cleans, and repairs mowers, tractors, vehicles, and miscellaneous equipment to keep them in good working order.
- Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Important Duties
- Attends in-service training sessions or other training sessions deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head.
- Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
- Maintains neat and orderly work area.
Education & Experience
- Must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in an organized Parks & Recreation maintenance position or have directly related experience in grounds maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
General knowledge of landscaping, grass, and tree care. Organizational/planning skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Basic Computer skills. Ability to troubleshoot, modify, and maintain maintenance equipment. Must be able to memorize and retain information. Must have good time management skills. Must have good cognitive and analytical skills. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Must be able to quickly judge and assess situations. Must be able to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility. Must possess manual ability to operate a computer.

Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid Missouri State Driver’s License.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Miscellaneous Requirements
- May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays.
- Subject to emergency call-in.
- Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.
- Ability to obtain position specific licenses and certifications as required.
Physical Demands
Performs bending and reaching to both ground level and overhead; lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls up to 50 pounds; must be able to hold and grip objects; must be able to stand for prolonged periods; must have use of both arms and legs; must have good lateral mobility.
Work Environment
May be exposed to extreme weather, dust or pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, electrical or mechanical hazards and extreme noise; May have poor ventilation; May work in confined places and awkward positions.
