Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to eight (8) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, and in areas such as parks administration, recreation administration, business administration, or public administration. Based on specific job duties and responsibilities, may be required to have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. Special Requirements for Aquatics Only: Applicants must possess valid certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification; prefer certification as a Valid Pool Operator and ARC-Lifeguard Training Instructor and AED (Automated External Defibrillator). If not certified in reference certifications, must obtain within 6 months of hire date. Special Requirements For Therapeutic Recreation Only: Possession of a national certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist - Professional level.

Preferences:
• Experience with staff development
• Experience supervising work teams in Park Operations, Park Management or Landscape Management for diverse populations including youth, teens, adults and seniors
• 5+ years of direct supervision experience to include hiring, training, scheduling and performance management
• 3+ years’ experience in customer service, permitting, rentals, special events, community engagement
• Ability to promote teamwork and serve as a catalyst for a positive work environment
• Experience scheduling and supervising staff across multiple locations
• Experience monitoring budget
• Experience preparing permitted and special events for park amenities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience using microcomputers (Word, Excel ACTIVENET Database, and Hansen work order management system)
• Demonstrated ability to work with employees, volunteers, contractors and community groups with diverse cultural and social backgrounds
• Ability to set goals and parameters for staff to conduct park operations and management utilizing departmental amenities
• Experience handling difficult interpersonal working relationships with employees and the public
• Experience collaborating and coordinating with multiple divisions to accomplish City of Virginia Beach and departmental goals and objectives
• Experience in contract administration and developing partnerships
• Experience handling personnel matters and administrative duties
• Experience with athletic leagues, programs, clinics, and camps
Special Instructions:
Special Instructions: This is an Alpha I position requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.
VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
