Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Paramedic, you will provide advanced emergency medical care and transport to critically ill or injured patients in pre-hospital and inter-facility settings.

Every day you will rapidly assess scenes, evaluate conditions, and administer life-saving interventions, while safely operating emergency vehicles and documenting care.

To be successful, you will demonstrate expert clinical skills, exceptional critical thinking under stress, and compassionate communication, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

  • Functions within the scope of practice of a Paramedic as defined within Nebraska and Iowa state regulations and listed in the Approved Skills and Procedures for Licensed EMS Providers document. This position does take a patient assignment, but must be overseen by an RN.

    • Provides patient care and performs patient care procedures:
    • EKG
    • Accu checks
    • CPR
    • Crutches
    • Ace bandage application
    • Splint application
    • Wound cleansing
    • Dressing
    • Immobilization
    • Medication administration under medical/nursing direction (IM, IV, oral ASA and Tylenol, oral analgesics) (not to include high risk medication including titratable medications)
    • IV insertions, IO insertion and EJ insertions
    • Foley catheterization
    • Intubation (only at the direct request and supervision by an ED physician who is present in the room).
    • Re-assessment of patient condition and status.
    • Documentation on the EMR (vital signs, assessments, medications, etc.)
    • Independent transportation to inpatient units
    • Oxygen administration
    • Cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation
    • Spinal stabilization and immobilization
    • Extrication of patients
    • Responds to code and trauma activations in the ED and, when requested, on the hospital campus and assisted with delegation from the primary RN.
    • Provides patient transportation within the Emergency Department and on the hospital campus as requested.
    • WILL NOT perform triage, initial patient assessment, provide dismissal instructions, administer antibiotics or Thrombolytics and other high-risk medications as determined by facility policy.
    • Consults as needed with supervising nurses and ED physicians regarding patient condition and treatment.
    • Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
    • Maintains professional and positive attitude to staff and patients.
    • Follows policies and procedures of CHI Health.
    • Maintains a customer-service, patient-focused environment.
    • Participates in QI activities and efforts to improve patient care processes.
    • Advises ED Medical Director and leadership regarding any practice issues or patient care concerns.
    • Attends staff meetings, in-services, and other departmental meetings as requested.
    • Provides evidence of on-going continuing education activities and maintains current educational requirements.
    • Able to assume care for patients with acuity levels of 3,4,5 under the supervision of a RN after initial assessment of chief complaint is completed.
    • Provides patient care and performs patient care procedures as listed on the attached Approved Skills and Procedures for Licensed EMS Providers.
    • Responds to Code 99 and trauma activations in the ED and, when requested, on the hospital campus.
    • Provides patient transportation within the Emergency Department and on the hospital campus as requested.
    • Enters patient orders into the hospital computer system when directed.
    • Assists with obtaining patient demographic and billing information.
Job Requirements

Required:

  • High School Graduate General Studies, upon hire or
  • High School GED General Studies, upon hire and
  • Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic: NE, upon hire and
  • Basic Life Support - CPR, upon hire or
  • Basic Life Support Instructor, upon hire and
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support, within 6 - months or
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor, within 6 - months and
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support, within 6 - months or
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor, within 6 - months


Preferred:

  • Previous clinical experience in an Emergency Department or hospital setting is
