Position Summary

The Utility Operator is responsible for ensuring the shipments meet plant order requirements, quality of product is within specifications, the correct product is packaged following plant instructions, package labeling meets requirements, finished product weights are within range. Plant orders could be in bags weighing up to 50 lbs. or super sacks. Utility Operator reports to the Production Supervisor. 3rd Shift Position 11PM - 7AM.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for maintaining compliance with the Huber Sustainability Management Standard requirements, within their sphere of influence. This may or may not include compliance with any air permits, wastewater permits, storm water permits, or other rules as presented to the employee as requirements.

Potentially Significant EH&S Impact(s): In charge of monitoring their equipment for visible emissions, immediate shut down of equipment with visible emissions and reporting emissions to their manager. Additionally, report all spills, incidents, and near hits to their manager, and input into Enablon.

1. Operate the blending system to ensure recipes meet specifications and that all packaged bags and supersacks comply with weight tolerances and regulatory labeling requirements. Manual handling and palletizing bags, weighing up to 50 lbs, may be required at a rate of up to 120 per hour for the shift.

2. Able to operate, troubleshoot, and service bulk powders and packaging equipment, but not limited to, supersack fillers and automatic bagging systems.

3. Services and repairs equipment as directed.

4. Keeps palletizer supplied with pallets, slip sheets and other needed supplies.

5. Cleans super sacks and bagged pallets in the pallet blow-off booth and wraps them to stabilize for shipment.

6. Warehouses finished product.

7. Performs preventative maintenance servicing of equipment as required. Ensure energy isolation is performed before repair work begins.

8. Advises following shift and maintenance of operating problems and conditions.

9. Complete required paperwork but not limited to plant orders, sample tags, lift truck inspections report, work request, and downtime reports.

10. Stencils product with customer information, repalletizes product, dumps nonconforming product.

11. Maintains and oversees good housekeeping practices. Inspects packaging supplies for reuse.

12. Maintains good housekeeping practice and ensures packaging supplies are inspected for potential reuse.

13. Maintains records of production.

14. Works closely with Purchasing and Scheduling to ensure adequate supplies of packaging and production materials are available.

15. Follow ISO 9001 guidelines and support the quality management system.

16. Consults with Maintenance personnel and initiates action to correct any problems if any are found.

17. Notify Production Manager of any problems that will or may impact a confirmed finished product ship date.

18. Consults with QC Lab Technician to assure compliance with quality control specifications.

Specialized/Technical Knowledge or Required Skills
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years industrial experience or a combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to handle multiple duties at once. Interacts with shippers, truckers, management, and plant personnel all in the same time frame.
  • Must have good computer skills working with Oracle and Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to operate a forklift and maintain forklift certification.
  • Willing and able to work and act safely.
  • Must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations that include the following: multiplication, addition, and percentages – all of which can be accomplished with the use of a calculator if needed.
  • Must be able to communicate both written and verbally with all levels to include management, peers, vendors, and plant personnel.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend company safety manual policies, operating procedures, SDSs, and various production schedules / reports.
  • Must be able to lift and move 50 lbs. consistently while packaging, must be able to ascend and descend ladders, climb stairs, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and crawl.
  • Must be able to work in a dusty environment where temperatures vary from extremely hot to cold, work in humidity and around various chemicals.
Physical Requirements
  • Works inside and outside in all areas of plant, and is often exposed to heat, cold, inclement weather, grease, oil, potential ground product / raw material spillage and dirty working conditions.
  • Has a thorough knowledge of each mill and its operation, the ability to start up, run and explain material flow of product through the mill. Plant milling system equipment is located on multiple levels and requires climbing stairs or stationary ladders to monitor and/or adjust its operation.
  • Must follow and comply with OSHA, IATA & IMDG industrial regulations.

Any offered salary is determined based on relevant factors such as an applicant's skills, performance, job responsibilities, prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications and market considerations.

[$22.52 - $24.78]

In addition to base compensation, individuals may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and profit-sharing payout.
