General Summary
Coordinates specialty instrumentation, equipment, supplies and implants on a daily basis. Uses his/her in-depth knowledge of technical, clinical and procedural skills to evaluate instruments and equipment for their specialty. Provides leadership to the Operating Room staff by helping them reach their potential and role models professionalism.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Acts as a clinical resource for perioperative services personnel within the specialty using evidence-based knowledge and prevailing standards.
- Coordinates perioperative patient care with other team members of the surgical team.
- Acts as a consultant to advise the perioperative team in areas of specialty expertise.
- Works with incoming surgeons to determine their specific needs and preferences, orients them to the equipment, instruments, and supplies available.
- Maintains a current list of supplies and equipment needed for specialties, working to simplify and standardize requirements.
- Tracks inventory and preventative maintenance of all instruments and equipment in their specialty.
- Participates in evaluating new instruments, equipment and supplies for specialty.
- Provides educational resources and coordinates with the perioperative educator regarding perioperative team education specific to the specialty.
- Assists with the preparation of the operating rooms prior to surgery and scrubbing/circulating duties as assigned.
- Verifies that the appropriate equipment and supplies are available.
- Organizes quality/performance improvement activities within the specialty.
- Identifies patient needs and assists in developing quality programs to meet those needs. Ensures delivery of quality services for patients.
- Facilitates or serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative patient care.
- Collects and analyzes data that applies to the specialty to facilitate collaboration and negotiation with stakeholders.
- Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentially of all appropriate information.
Common Expectations:
- Assists manager with development, implementation and assurance of compliance with policies and procedures.
- Participates in OR specialty member evaluations by providing feedback about job performance to the Nurse Manager.
- Participates in interviews for specialty team selection.
- Uses effective conflict resolution techniques.
- Mentors team members within the specialty as required.
- Serves as a role model of professional behavior.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
- Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
- Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
