The Opportunity

We are seeking a proactive and experienced Occupational Health & Safety Manager to foster a safe and compliant work environment across our U.S. retail operations. This role offers an opportunity to lead impactful safety programs, strengthen workplace practices, and promote a culture of health and safety across all stores and support center office.


Reporting to the Director, HR, the Occupational Health & Safety Manager will oversee the development and execution of safety initiatives for stores across Washington and California. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, including those set by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA), while driving continuous improvement in workplace safety standards.


The Occupational Health & Safety Manager will collaborate closely with Store Operations, Human Resources, Facilities, and Food Safety teams to implement safety programs, conduct inspections, deliver training, and investigate incidents. Acting as a key partner across departments, this role supports multiple locations and plays a critical role in reducing workplace risks and building a strong, proactive safety culture throughout the organization.


You Will

Safety Program Management

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of company-wide health and safety programs.
  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Oversee key safety programs such as IIPP, APP, Hazard Communication, Emergency Action Plans, Lockout/Tagout, Bloodborne Pathogens, Heat Illness Prevention, and Workplace Violence Prevention.
  • Stay current with regulatory changes and proactively update policies and practices.

Inspections & Risk Assessment

  • Conduct regular safety audits across stores, back-of-house operations, and office locations.
  • Identify risks and partner with leadership to implement practical, timely solutions.
  • Assess safety conditions in areas such as food preparation, equipment use, material handling, and office environments.
  • Drive ergonomic and injury prevention initiatives to support employee well-being.

Incident Management & Reporting

  • Lead investigations into workplace incidents, injuries, and near misses.
  • Identify root causes and implement preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
  • Maintain accurate safety records, including OSHA logs and reporting.
  • Analyze trends and recommend improvements to strengthen overall safety performance.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans for stores and office locations.
  • Organize and lead drills (e.g., fire evacuation, emergency response exercises).
  • Ensure employees are prepared and emergency equipment is properly maintained.

Training & Awareness

  • Deliver engaging safety training for employees and leadership.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through ongoing awareness and store-level initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Act as the primary point of contact during OSHA and state inspections.
  • Support audits, manage documentation, and ensure timely follow-up on any findings.

Workers’ Compensation & Prevention

  • Partner with HR to support workers’ compensation cases and return-to-work programs.
  • Use data and insights to drive injury prevention strategies across locations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Store Operations, HR, FSQA, and Asset Protection to integrate safety into daily operations.
  • Support the safe rollout of new equipment, processes, and store layouts.

Other Duties

  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support overall safety and operational goals.


You Should Have / Be

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Safety, or related field is required.
  • 5+ years of hands-on occupational health and safety managerial experience in retail, food manufacturing, grocery, hospitality, or distribution environments required.
  • Proven experience supporting multi-site operations, with the ability to manage priorities across multiple locations..
  • Strong and working knowledge of OSHA regulatory standards, Cal/OSHA safety requirements, workplace injury investigation, safety training program development, OSHA recordkeeping requirements, and hazard identification and risk mitigation.
  • Strong incident investigation and hazard assessment skills.
  • Ability to deliver training and safety education programs promptly.
  • Strong communication (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence and partner with operational leaders.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license and maintain a driving record that meets company insurance requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to store locations in California and Washington, including driving between local store and office locations and traveling by commercial airline for business trips, including occasional overnight travel.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health & Safety Technologist (OHST), or similar recognized safety credentials are strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual in English & Chinese or Spanish is preferred.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move throughout retail store, warehouse, and office environments to conduct safety inspections and observations.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while inspecting store departments, including produce, meat, seafood, bakery, kitchen, and receiving areas.
  • Ability to occasionally climb stairs, use ladders, and access elevated areas when conducting safety inspections.
  • Ability to occasionally bend, kneel, crouch, or reach to examine equipment, workstations, or storage areas.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to approximately 25 pounds (e.g., safety equipment, training materials, or inspection tools).
  • Ability to work periodically in environments with varying temperatures, including refrigerated and freezer areas.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment for extended periods when preparing reports, safety documentation, and training materials.
  • Ability to visually observe workplace conditions and read safety documents, labels, and inspection materials.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with employees, management, and external agencies regarding safety matters.


Shift

  • 5-day work week (Monday to Friday), 9:00am – 5:30pm (Actual working hours may vary slightly by department, depending on operational needs.)
