Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach is hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I toperform the following duties:

  • Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and asphalt.

  • Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies to and from repair jobs.

  • Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal or sanding of icy streets and roads.

  • Operate a Motor Grader to level soil.

  • Operate a Broom Truck for maintenance.

  • Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.

  • Operates pothole patcher truck in repair of minor roadway defects.

  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License - Class B (VA or NC)

**This position is Alpha 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.**

CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid Class B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:

  • $1,000 with first paycheck

  • $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

  • $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Driver's license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Preferences:
- Experience operating heavy equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, single and tandem axle dump trucks.
- Knowledge of standard practices used in asphalt and concrete construction/maintenance activities, including knowledge of drainage and maintenance of proper grades and public right-of-way.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to lift or move various materials and supplies weighing between 50-100 lbs.
- Possession of a Tank Vehicle Endorsement.
- Work Zone Safety experience
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class B (VA or NC)
