What We’re Looking For

Michael Baker International is seeking a MEP Project Manager (Building Design) to join our Integrated Design & Advisory (IDA) Mechanical team in San Diego, CA, supporting our growing Defense, Industrial and Mission Critical/Data Center markets. This is a seller‑doer technical leadership role for a client‑facing engineer who enjoys driving work, delivering complex building designs, and growing long‑term relationships. The role combines hands‑on engineering, project delivery, and business development in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment

In this role, you will serve as a Designer of Record (DOR) and trusted technical advisor, combining hands‑on engineering with project leadership, client engagement, and pursuit support. You will collaborate closely with clients and internal teams to deliver high‑performance mechanical systems in high‑reliability environments while helping grow repeat and new business.

What You’ll Do

Technical Leadership 

  • Serve as the Mechanical DOR and senior technical lead for complex HVAC, process cooling, hydronic, and piping systems.
  • Lead building systems design from concept through construction with hands‑on technical involvement.
  • Deliver solutions for mission‑critical, secure, and regulated facilities, including environments subject to ICD‑705 and SCIF requirements.
  • Ensure quality, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client expectations.
  • Support construction through submittals, RFIs, and field observations.

Project Execution

  • Manage scopes, schedules, budgets, and risk in alignment with Michael Baker’s delivery standards.
  • Maintain strong financial performance through forecasting, change management, and risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate with design‑build teams and contractors to develop value‑based solutions.

Business Development & Client Engagement

  • Act as a client‑facing leader, supporting the growth and retention of key client relationships.
  • Support and lead pursuits, including proposals, interviews, technical strategies, scopes, and fees.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat work and expanded services through strong delivery and trusted advisor relationships.
  • Attend industry events.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • BS in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering (ABET‑accredited).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 10+ years of mechanical building systems design experience.
  • Mission Critical/Data Centers, Defense OEM, Industrial Manufacturing, Aerospace, or Healthcare facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience as Designer of Record on complex projects.
  • Strong knowledge of ASHRAE, building codes, and mission‑critical standards.
  • Proficiency in Revit and TRACE (or similar).
  • Experience supporting client pursuits and business development.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship required

Compensation
The salary range for this position is $110,000- $190,000. The actual salary offered will be dependent on the preferred candidate’s experience, expertise, and physical location.
