Job Summary
The Medical Technologist, under general supervision of the Laboratory/Radiology Director, performs and analyzes complex laboratory tests on patient samples (blood, tissues, and fluids) to provide crucial data for disease diagnosis and treatment. Key duties include operating and maintaining high-precision equipment, ensuring test accuracy through quality control, data record keeping, interpreting results, and communicating findings to providers and healthcare teams. Proficient phlebotomy skills across the life span, able to work independently and employ critical thinking skills demonstrated by competent troubleshooting abilities. Stay updated on advancements in laboratory techniques to improve patient outcomes. Certification by a national credentialing agency validates professional expertise and commitment to national standards in patient care.
Essential Functions
- Perform pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic assessment on all patient testing to ensure sample suitability and integrity, evaluate accuracy and precision of test results
- Demonstrate competency for all test procedures performed at DWC laboratory through adherence to established policies and procedures for all laboratory testing processes
- Review quality control data to identify analytic discrepancies, troubleshoot and document remedial action taken when test systems deviate from established performance guidelines, resolve inconsistencies to ensure patient results are within allowable ranges before release from laboratory information system (LIS)
- Report test results, identify results that are abnormal and communicate values to un'ina's provider following established laboratory documentation protocol, submit reportable infectious disease information to the State of Alaska public health department or other designated officials
- Maintain laboratory equipment and analyzers to ensure quality control measures meet CLIA regulations
- Perform assigned proficiency, competency, and continuing education within established timelines
- Train new employees, DWC staff, and laboratory science students, and provide remedial training as needed
- Collaborate with Laboratory Director in preparation for laboratory inspection from regulatory agencies, such as clinical staff competency assessments and writing laboratory protocols
- Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications
Education
- A Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology and ASCP national certification or equivalent as determined by a national credential certification agency
- An Associate's degree in Medical Technology and an American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry national certification or equiovalent as determined by a national creditial certification agency
Experience
- Experience working with Electronic Health Records (EHR)
- Experience working in a medical/public health laboratory setting as obtained from prior work experience or that obtained in clinical rotations through required education
Preferred
- Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
- Proficient phlebotomy skills across the life span - infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients
License/Certification
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent certification from nationally recognized organization or military certification
- An Associate's degree in Medical Technology and an American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry national certification or equivalent as determined by a national certification agency
- Must have a valid Alaska Driver's license and remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, or obtain within 90 days of hire, or, with approval of the hiring manager, sign a *Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in lieu of having a driver's license to perform the required duties of the position (if applicable)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association (AHA) certification or able to obtain within 3 months of hire

- Knowledge of basic clinical processes to include pre-analytic and analytic factors that influence test results, medical terminology, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, HIPPA and 42 CFR
- Provide guidance for DWC staff with regards to the LIS, acceptable practices of laboratory medicine per CLIA regulations, limited test utilization and interpretive information with referral of advanced clinical questions to the Laboratory Director
- Ability to work independently, interact and communicate in a professional manner that promotes a harmonious and collaborative work environment, listen and respond to constructive criticism in a productive manner
- Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills with attention to detail, and proficient in Microsoft Office
- Observe safety, infection control, and risk management policies and procedures
- Inventory management of laboratory supplies to ensure adequate levels of inventory are maintained
