Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS): $15,000 with a 2-year commitment
Medical Lab Technician (MLT): $10,000 with a 2-year commitment
UPMC offers a robust Laboratory Career Ladder, where candidates will be placed into the correct level and status based on education and background.
Responsibilities:
- Provide friendly, professional service to patients, clinicians, and team members, responding promptly to calls and requests.
- Follow laboratory and hospital policies related to safety, quality, compliance, and best practices.
- Collect and process specimens accurately, including phlebotomy as required, ensuring proper handling and labeling.
- Perform laboratory testing using approved methods with accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail.
- Identify critical or abnormal results and take appropriate action following established guidelines.
- Recognize factors that may impact test results and apply corrective actions when needed.
- Troubleshoot issues with instruments, testing methods, specimens, or supplies using defined procedures.
- Operate and maintain lab equipment, complete quality control checks, and assist with preventive maintenance.
- Maintain strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, instruments, and how physiological conditions affect results.
- Perform high‑complexity testing independently, support day‑to‑day workflow leadership as assigned, and help train new staff and students.
MLS:
MLT:
- Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA), OR
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA ’88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
- Experience: Minimum 1 years’ experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred. New York License required for NY locations.
