Medical Laboratory Scientist

Description

The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing routine and specialized laboratory testing to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role ensures accurate and timely test results through proper specimen handling, adherence to quality standards, and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform routine and complex clinical laboratory testing across applicable disciplines (Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank/Transfusion Services, Immunology, and Urinalysis)
• Analyze, interpret, and verify patient test results in accordance with established procedures and quality standards
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and equipment
• Perform quality control, calibration, and preventive maintenance activities per laboratory protocols
• Ensure proper specimen identification, handling, processing, and storage
• Recognize and resolve assay, specimen, or instrument issues; escalate when appropriate
• Document results, quality activities, and corrective actions in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
• Comply with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements
• Follow all safety, infection control, and HIPAA guidelines
• Participate in competency assessments, proficiency testing, and continuing education
• Communicate effectively with laboratory leadership, clinical staff, and providers as needed
• May assist with training and mentoring of laboratory technicians, students, or new staff

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related life science

ASCP (MLS or MT), AMT, or equivalent national certification (or eligibility)

Knowledge of laboratory operations, quality control, and regulatory standards

Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment

Effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Active ASCP (MLS) or MT certification

Previous experience in a hospital, reference lab, or outpatient laboratory setting

Experience with laboratory automation and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)

Cross‑training or experience in multiple laboratory disciplines

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charlotte, NC.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $45.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Charlotte,NC.
