Mechanical Engineer – Project Level

Company Summary

Triton combines 30+ years of experience with exciting growth and innovation opportunities within product development and R&D space. We support Government and commercial markets by delivering advanced solutions across applications in defense, security, aerospace, energy, environmental sustainability, and human health. Where we see a larger opportunity, we create new companies to scale these solutions into businesses. Our teams thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment where we tackle complex challenges, meet our customers' toughest requirements, and deliver high-impact results on time, on budget and have fun while doing it.

Triton's Ocean Systems is a fast-paced, interdisciplinary engineering team focused on bringing ideas from our heads to the ocean. We work on a wide variety of projects and our breadth provides opportunities to form and lead project teams that tackle the Navy's most pressing problems and priorities. We are developing uncrewed systems (unmanned underwater vehicles, surface craft, launch and recovery systems), marine systems (submarine/shipboard equipment, diver equipment), and ocean sensing systems (including sensors and signal processing).

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, and deployment of innovative maritime technologies. You'll work alongside multidiscipline teams (mechanical, electrical, and software) to bring advanced ocean systems from concept through field testing and into operational environments.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys both engineering design and getting out in the field to see systems operate in real environments.

In this role, a typical week includes designing and iterating prototype subsystems in CAD, conducting lab tests or preparing for at-sea deployments, collaborating with electrical and software engineers to integrate systems, analyzing data to refine designs, and contributing to proposals or new concept development.

Responsibilities

  • Solve complex, multidisciplinary engineering challenges with creativity and rigor
  • Provide ideation, system architecture, and prototype development from concept through field testing
  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders, including customers and partners
  • Manage and coordinate technical contributors (consultants, subcontractors, and collaborators)
  • Plan and execute experimental programs, including lab and at-sea testing
  • Analyze results and clearly communicate findings through high-quality written reports and presentations
  • Support business development through technical proposal writing and concept development
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally to support testing at customer sites, field sites, at-sea or otherwise as required

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, including modeling, simulation, and system-level thinking
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced R&D environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with structured problem solving and product development processes
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, fabrication, and experimental testing
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing methods and design for manufacturability
  • Experience performing trade studies, analysis of alternatives, and technology assessments
  • Proficiency in CAD tools, SolidWorks preferred
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and eager to learn new technologies

Preferred Experience

Candidates may bring depth in one or more of the following areas:

Ocean & Marine Systems

  • Ocean engineering concepts including materials selection, offshore structures, and subsea systems
  • Experience with underwater or maritime hardware development
  • Familiarity with launch and recovery systems and at-sea operations
  • Hands-on experience with in-water or field testing
  • Experience working in harsh or constrained environments

Mechanical & Systems

  • Design and operation of hydraulic systems, interpret hydraulic schematics
  • System integration across mechanical, electrical, and control subsystems

Electrical & Controls

  • Experience with power and control systems (e.g., 480 VAC 3-phase, 120 VAC, and low-voltage DC systems)
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics

Education & Experience

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering design, prototyping, and testing
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical efforts, projects, or small teams strongly preferred

Working Conditions

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance preferred
  • This position is considered ONSHORE/OFFSHORE WORK and willingness to support field testing, including occasional at-sea deployments
