Position Summary:

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will support the design and analysis of mechanical systems across industrial, commercial, and water/wastewater facilities. You will contribute to engineering deliverables including calculations, technical reports, drawings, and specifications, while gaining hands-on experience with real-world projects and design practices.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Support mechanical engineers in the design of mechanical systems from concept through construction, including preparation of construction documents.
  • Contribute to HVAC load calculations, ventilation calculations, and basic energy modeling, while gaining exposure to applicable codes, standards, and energy efficiency practices.
  • Assist in the sizing and layout of HVAC systems (airside and hydronic) and plumbing systems under the guidance of senior engineering staff.
  • Participate in the development and review of construction specifications using tools such as RIB SpecLink[HB1]� [HB1].
  • Support construction administration efforts, including responses to contractor RFIs, review of shop drawings and submittals, and assistance with punch list activities.
  • Attend site visits and field observations to gain hands-on exposure to installed systems and construction practices.
  • Gain mentorship and real-world experience across commercial, industrial, and water/wastewater projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited university.
  • Interest in mechanical system design, including HVAC and plumbing systems across commercial, industrial, or water/wastewater facilities.
  • Foundational understanding of mechanical engineering principles such as thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office. Exposure to AutoCAD or Revit is a plus.
  • Interest in learning building codes, engineering standards, and design guidelines (e.g., ASHRAE).
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently on assigned tasks.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while working at a computer.
  • Ability to move about in an office environment to access files, equipment, and meet with colleagues.
  • Ability to visit active construction sites, which may involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs or ladders, standing for extended periods, and navigating areas with limited accessibility.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of drawings, field equipment, or related materials as needed.
  • Ability to observe details during site visits, including mechanical systems, equipment installations, and construction activities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person, over the phone, and in writing

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Work is primarily performed in a professional office setting with standard office equipment and typical environmental conditions (e.g., climate-controlled space, moderate noise levels).
  • Periodic work is performed at construction sites, industrial facilities, or municipal infrastructure locations. These environments may involve exposure to:
  • Varying weather conditions
  • Noise, dust, or mechanical equipment
  • Uneven surfaces or confined spaces
  • Active construction activity requiring use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Travel to project sites, client meetings, or other offices may be required.
  • The role may require adherence to site-specific safety protocols and the use of PPE, such as hard hats, safety glasses, high-visibility vests, gloves, or protective footwear.

This position requires periodic travel, approximately 15% or more
