The job description

  • The Planet Group is seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer with 5–10 years of experience specializing in Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) development. This role is responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining accurate P&IDs that depict fluid flow, control systems, and equipment used in industrial processes. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with engineering teams to support safe, efficient, and compliant system design.


Key Responsibilities:

P&ID Development

  • Create, update, and maintain P&IDs using industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD P&ID)
  • Accurately represent piping systems, equipment, instrumentation, and control logic
  • Partner with mechanical, process, and project engineers to gather design requirements
  • Ensure P&IDs align with project specifications and operational needs
  • Produce clear, detailed P&ID documentation including symbols, piping layouts, instrumentation, and control loops
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date drawing records
  • Ensure all P&IDs comply with applicable safety regulations, industry standards, and project requirements
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to support selection of piping materials, valves, and instrumentation
  • Track revisions and manage updates to P&IDs
  • Communicate changes effectively to all project stakeholders
  • Review and validate drawings for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with project objectives and safety standards
  • Develop as-built P&IDs to reflect final installed conditions following construction or modifications
  • Clearly communicate design updates and technical information
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior designers and drafters


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5–10 years of experience in mechanical design with a strong focus on P&ID development in industrial environments
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD P&ID or similar design tools
  • Strong understanding of industrial systems, piping, equipment, and instrumentation
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations
  • Solid problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities
  • High attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality deliverables
