Tropical Shipping in Riviera Beach is seeking a Mechanic!
The ideal candidate will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy machinery—including excavators, loaders, cranes, and diesel-powered equipment—ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime. You’ll perform routine inspections, troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, and complete preventative maintenance to keep operations moving. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and experienced working with large equipment in fast-paced environments, with a strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Auto Maintenance - Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all equipment including but not limited to: forklifts up to 52K lb capacity, jockey & road trucks, manlifts, custom buggies, utility/golf carts, fuel trucks, pressure washers, pick-up trucks and service trucks. - Performs inspections of all equipment and handle any existing problems. - Performs brake service maintenance repair (including DOT vehicles). Operates, inspects, and troubleshoots electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical failures on equipment as required and diagnosing defects. - Performs diagnostics via scanning tools and software: Snap On, Cummins Insite, Davie 4, ESA, Bendix, Service Ranger. - Diagnoses engine fuel & mechanical systems Diagnose and repair engine, electrical, hydraulic, HVAC and minor transmission issues. - Utilizes maintenance programs to create, schedule, and track work orders in CMMS. - Makes service calls to various Tropical departments to facilitate equipment repairs as required.
- Port Maintenance - Performs preventive maintenance and repair, including required inspections, on Strads, Reach stackers, Cranes, Spreaders and Rotators. - Adjusts and replaces Strad wire ropes. - Works with senior mechanics on repairs, maintenance procedures and techniques. - Performs equipment pre-start inspections and preventive maintenance as needed. - Maintains accurate and complete work logs and inspection documentation. - Performs advanced mechanical, electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs and intermediate A/C system repairs. Adjusts/replaces crane wire ropes. Works with little to no supervision.
- Refrigeration Maintenance - Inspects and tests 20- and 40-foot mechanical reefers and gen-sets. - Performs complete preventive maintenance on mechanical reefers and gen-sets. - Maintains accurate records of work performed. - Performs corrective maintenance on loaded casualty units including using vacuum pump/recovery machine. - Performs soldering and torch usage repairs. Ability to solder copper to brass/stainless. Leak check all components, evacuate, R&R drier and charge unit. Diagnose faulty compressors. - Performs basic preventative maintenance and repairs on all equipment including but not limited to: chassis underslung, clip-on generators as well as containerized / portable generators. Performs major and minor repairs on engines and generators including diagnosing oil leaks. Diagnose field, safety switch issue repairs. Perform Transfresh Operations.
- Container/Chassis Maintenance - Welds, flame straightens and fabricates steel, stainless steel, aluminum(T-Floor), frame squaring. Install foaming in refrigerated container ½ wall and more. Operates shop equipment: shears, brakes, etc. Replaces and/or repairs wooden floors. Repairs mechanical components. Repair/replace dry container corner post, header, rail, roof, cross member and tunnel sections. Repair Flatrack sections, ends and main frame. Repair corner castings and full rail replacement. Repair heavy damage refrigeration container walls and roof and stringers. - Brake repair and replacement (S-Cam Air Brakes). Rebuilds and/or repairs axles and suspensions. Advanced frame straightening and fabrications. Repairs and/or replaces air valves and brake chambers. Repairs and/or replaces lights. Inspects and repairs of the DOT ABS System. Remove/install tire/rim assemblies. - Performs Commercial OTR Tire Service (CTS) 400 level Dismounts and mounts earth mover, commercial, passenger and light truck tires following OSHA and TIA industry standards. Determines repairable tire conditions and makes needed repairs per TIA specifications. Mounts and safely inflates tires to prescribed PSI, per load requirements. (TIA standards) Performs Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) operation and set up TPMS sensors. Operates tire machines, jacks, compressors, electric and hydraulic equipment. Regularly inspects equipment, tools and service vehicles and completes daily inspection logs. Insures compliance with the safety requirements as outlined by OSHA and the TIA. Must operate company service trucks changing tires in the Port and out on the side of the highway. Must be able to safely move heavy equipment such as reach stackers, container straddle carrier, road tractors and jockey trucks. Must work closely with purchasing to ensure tire inventory is correct.
- All Areas - Keeps the work area and equipment clean, orderly, and safe. - Must be able to use all hand and power tools. - Participates in online and in person training seminars, classes, and technically oriented workshops. - Performs diagnostics via scanning tools and software. - Utilizes maintenance programs to create and schedule work. - Makes service calls to various Tropical departments to facilitate equipment repairs as required. - Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent vocational technological graduate.
Experience:
- All Areas - Demostrates ability to perform advanced mechanical, electrical, hydrolic, intermediate AC systems troubleshooting and repairs. - Must be able to operate and certify on 5K and 30K lb. forklifts and Jockey Trucks - Ability to obtain a U.S. Passport
Licenses:
- Valid Local Driver's License.
Physical Requirements:
- Operations - Manual dexterity to perform repetitive motion tasks on computer or handheld device or tools. Ability to frequently twist, bend, reach, squat, kneel, climb on equipment, push/pull 50 - 200 pounds, crawl, lift and carry at least 80 pounds on a daily basis. Able to withstand exposure to extreme weather conditions. Ability to travel in various modes of transportation (e.g. automobile, airplane, train etc.) Occasionally exposed to outside elements during the daily workday and when traveling.
