Job Duties:
Public Works Fleet Management has multiple Mechanic Technician positions available. Selected candidates may be offered a position as a Mechanic Technician I ($49,254.40 - $76,336.00), Mechanic Technician II ($54,288.00 - $84,156.80), or, Mechanic Technician III ($59,862.40 - $92,788.80) depending on the qualifications of the individuals and shop needs.
Representative work duties include but are not limited to:
Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as oil changes, lubrication, battery checks and safety checks as well as State Inspections as licensed/capable
Performs repairs such as minor tune-ups, replacing water pumps, radiators, brake air compressors, hydraulic lines and hoses, brake shoes, and servicing of aerial ladders and platforms
Assist in more complex repairs such as servicing heater and air conditioning systems, and differential and transmission repairs.
Perform road repairs at local police precincts and outlying areas of the city
Transports heavy equipment to repair facilities for specialized service or repair.
Tows light and medium duty vehicles to the main garage for additional work
May require employees to perform work outside in any and all-weather conditions. Must be capable of responding to occasional after-hours service call-outs.
Must be safety-conscious and unafraid of heights- job may require employee to work on tall equipment.
This position is designated ALPHA I and individuals may be required to work in emergency events and inclement weather.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in diesel engines, air brake systems, and advanced electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting, hold ASE certifications, and be experienced with computerized fleet maintenance and work order systems.
Supplemental Pay:
Employees may be eligible to receive up to $6,000 annually in stipends for certifications and licensure related to their position. Supplemental pay is distributed across 26 pay periods and includes:

CDL Hiring Bonus: Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $2,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
Shift Differential Pay:
Some positions are designated as Evening Shift. Employees required to work Evening Shift only (10-hour shift, 4 days per week) will receive 5% shift differential pay.

Minimum Requirements:
Mechanic Technician I Minimums: Completion of eighth (8) grade plus one (1) year of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Automotive Mechanic, Construction Mechanic or General Shop Mechanic or one (1) year as Mechanic Trainee; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
Mechanic Technician II Minimums: Completion of eighth (8) grade plus three (3) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
Mechanic Technician III Minimums: Completion of eighth (8) grade plus five (5) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. May require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) May require a State Inspectors License May require current Refrigerant Recycling Certificate May require Brake Inspector Certification May be required to complete Confined Space Entry training.

Preferences:
• Experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or such as dump trucks and automated refuse trucks
• Fire truck apparatus maintenance and repair experience
• Electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting experience
• Maintenance and repair experience with heavy duty trucks (12 ton and larger)
• Diesel engine experience
• ASE certifications
• Class 5 to class 8 truck experience
• Air brake experience
• Experience with computerized fleet maintenance and work order programs
Special Instructions:
Fleet Management Operating Hours: 6:30 am - 5:00 pm
Shift Options Available:
Four 10-hour days (6:30 am – 5:00 pm) with either Monday, Wednesday, or Friday off
OR
Four 10-hour days (6:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday, 3:00 pm - 1:30 am Tuesday - Thursday)
Five 8-hour days based on shop needs (examples include 6:30 am – 3:00 pm.; 7:30 am – 4:00 pm)

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
