40 HOURS/WEEKUnder regular supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Work involves assisting Mechanics in repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment and keeping the shop clean. Reports to the Shop Foreman.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists Mechanics as necessary during repairs.
Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly manner to promote effective and safe operations.
Performs preventative maintenance when Mechanics are unavailable.
Provides assistance with performing diagnostic procedures on vehicles/equipment in order to determine necessary repairs or maintenance.
Provides assistance with repairs of assigned mechanical defects such as hydraulic, electrical, air conditioning, tire, drive train, brakes, steering, transmission, and related systems.
Provides assistance with small engines, light duty vehicles, trucks, electrical generators, tractors, lawn mowers, radiators, backhoes, diesel engines, axles, front ends, heavy-duty vehicles, etc.
Provides assistance with minor and major repairs and maintenance on City automobiles and other vehicles or equipment including changing tires, adjusting headlights, changing spark plugs, adjusting or replacing fan belts, and minor motor tune-ups.
Provides assistance with performing bodywork including such duties as sand blasting, undercoating, priming and painting, and making fiberglass repairs.
Provides assistance with performing various preventative maintenance duties such as changing oil, fluids, belts, hoses, tires, filters, etc., and performing greasing, cleaning, and other routine tasks.
Provides assistance with repairs to tires which includes plugging or inserting boot, replacing and balancing tires on a computerized balancing system, changing tires with tire changers or manually, replacing tubes, etc.
Receives and/or reviews various records and report such as verbal instructions. Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as verbal instructions and work orders.
Refers to manuals, diagnostics, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
Operates a variety of vehicles and a variety of equipment and machinery such as lifts, racks, jacks, electrical testers for batteries, air compressor, etc.
Uses a variety of tools such as air tools, grease guns, mechanic tools, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as oil, filters, grease, replacement parts, general office supplies, etc.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Assistant Foreman, coworkers, other City departments, and the general public.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Keeps diesel pumps operating for drainage during storms. Installs batteries in vehicles.
Performs other related duties as required.
May be required to report to work during emergency situations, including, but not limited to, city-wide declared emergencies.
Requires satisfactory work experience as a automotive/equipment mechanic, mechanic's assistant or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a current, valid Louisiana driver's license.
