The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled, journeyman-level maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide range of utility vehicles, trucks, heavy equipment, and small engines. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all fleet assets by conducting preventative maintenance, troubleshooting complex mechanical issues, and maintaining compliance with all applicable safety and regulatory standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
- Perform duties as a journeyman level mechanic to support the reliability, safety and efficiency of utility vehicles, trucks and construction type equipment
- Remove, replace, rebuild and repair mechanical systems to ensure performance and prevent breakdowns.
- Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance to extend equipment lifespan and reduce downtime.
- Fabricate and construct items using various tools, metals and methods of welding and assembly.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and solve practical problems using a variety of industry techniques, analytical electronic tools and computer systems.
- Provide professional customer service to internal customers by addressing and investigating reported damage and/or malfunctioning vehicles and equipment.
- Performs maintenance and services to tools and small engines as needed.
- Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting and repairs of hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, air, hybrid systems and combustion engines.
- Coordinate independent inspections as needed with outside vendors.
- Responsible for completing assigned work in a safe and efficient manner that is in conformance with all applicable regulations, to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operating condition of all fleet equipment.
- Inspect, troubleshoot and repair various types of air conditioning systems with classified freons.
- Operate vehicles and equipment to aid in diagnostic troubleshooting, adjustments and ensure repairs are properly completed.
- Navigate and utilize fleet maintenance system software as it pertains to input of maintenance and labor and review of historical information.
- Complete all assigned work safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations, including OSHA, DOT, ANSI, and manufacturer standards.
Other Position Functions:- Maintain a clean and organized office, garage, work area and shop truck.
- Maintain fleet records including, but not limited to, maintenance work to be done, maintenance work done, fuel consumption, and spare parts inventory.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience:High school diploma or equivalent. Five plus years of current hands-on experience with engine repair and maintenance of a wide range of light, medium and heavy construction vehicles and equipment. Experience must include strong emphasis on EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), after treatment exhaust and modern diesel engines.
In addition to experience listed above, must have one of the following:
- Completion of a recognized automotive and diesel mechanic vocational/apprentice program, including military training,
- ASE Master Automotive and Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Certification,
- AA in Automotive and Diesel Mechanics
Equivalency:
- Consideration may be given to applicants with ten (10) years of current, progressive, hands-on education and experience directly related to fleet vehicle and equipment maintenance in lieu of the education and certification requirements above.
Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:Must have a valid Driver’s License and Class A Commercial driver’s license with a tank vehicle endorsement or be able to obtain within three (3) months of hire. Must be able to pass a physical examination, including a lift test and DOT drug test. In addition, must have or the ability to obtain:
- First Aid Card with CPR
- Forklift Operator Card
Computer Skills:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Required to speak and hear clearly when communicating over the telephone and in person. Wears personal protective equipment as required. Mechanical ability to operate the tools of the trade. Must be able to pass a physical examination appropriate to the position.
Work Environment:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee will be exposed to both indoors and outdoors; maintenance shop, yard, and field-service environment in varying weather conditions. Indoor settings include tight or awkward positions, moving machinery, under vehicles, in engine compartments, or elevated platforms, etc. Individuals may be exposed to hazardous conditions, including exposure to noise, vibration, fumes, oils, grease, dust, chemicals, and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment may range up to 85 decibels.
