Job Title: Material Handler
Job Description

The Material Handler supports coil preparation and crating operations by safely moving, inspecting, and preparing coils and other customer products for processing and shipment. This role follows established work instructions, quality procedures, and safety protocols to ensure materials are handled accurately, efficiently, and in a clean, well-organized work area.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all published work instructions, quality procedures, and safety protocols at all times.
  • Open and close crates or containers that hold coils or other customer products using proper tools and techniques.
  • Inspect coils for any signs of damage or conditions that may affect quality, and report issues according to quality assurance and quality control procedures.
  • Attach identifying tags or labels to coils, or clearly mark information on crates, pallets, or other containers to ensure accurate tracking.
  • Read work orders and follow verbal instructions from the lead person to determine which coils or containers need to be moved, hung, or crated in the work area.
  • Secure or remove lifting attachments on coils and other materials in preparation for movement or processing.
  • Lift coils by hand, as needed, to load or unload load bars, basket bars, or monorail hang points, using safe lifting practices.
  • Operate or assist with overhead crane operation and rigging activities as needed to move materials safely within the facility.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and clean equipment as instructed to support a safe and efficient operation.
  • Follow all safety and housekeeping standards, including proper storage and handling of materials and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate material flow and resolve issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production and warehouse operations.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Entry-level experience with a preference for three to nine months of related material handling or manufacturing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and understand safety instructions, work instructions, and company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow detailed but straightforward written and oral instructions and apply common sense understanding in daily tasks.
  • Basic math skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
  • Material handling experience, including loading, unloading, and moving products in a warehouse or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, talk, hear, stoop, kneel, crouch, or climb regularly throughout the shift.
  • Ability to regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong safety awareness and commitment to following safety procedures.
  • Good manual dexterity for handling coils, tags, and equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and consistently.
  • Effective communication skills to work with leads, supervisors, and team members.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a warehouse or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with inventory handling, packing, and general labor tasks.
  • Experience operating or assisting with overhead crane operation.
  • Basic rigging knowledge for safely moving and securing loads.
  • Industrial work experience involving material movement and equipment use.
  • Problem-solving skills to address routine issues in material flow or product handling.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work area.

Work Environment

This role is based in a warehouse and manufacturing environment that involves working around industrial equipment and moving materials. You will spend most of your shift standing and walking, with regular bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing as required by material handling tasks. The position requires frequent lifting and moving of materials up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, using proper ergonomic and safety practices. Work is performed around overhead cranes and rigging equipment, with a strong emphasis on safety procedures and housekeeping standards. The schedule requires flexibility to work a second shift as needed, supporting continuous production operations.

This is a Contract position based out of Louisville, KY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
