POSITION SUMMARY
Master Fitness Apprentice will instruct groups or individuals in exercise activities for the primary purpose of personal fitness. They will assist in supporting, mentoring, and orienting wellness floor staff, and personal trainers to embrace the YMCA culture and spirit, focusing on building relationship skills and superb customer service. The individual will ensure the safety and well-being of all members, guests, and program participants throughout the facility at all times while also helping to promote and plan activities and programs.
*This is a 3-year DOL Registered Apprenticeship position that requires enrollment at Washtenaw Community College.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Program Development:
- Teach, develop, and evaluate exercise or fitness techniques in tandem with developing educational or training programs for members.
- Promote the YMCA through programs and membership sales, support membership engagement and collect information to report appropriate data.
- Substitute as needed for group exercise classes and health management programs.
- Gather program statistics as requested. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in all programs. Submit program enrollment data when requested.
- Organize health and wellness activities or events.
- Develop connections in the community to plan and provide monthly workshops for the community.
Healthy Living:
- Be actively and visibly involved with members, volunteers, and staff in a positive, friendly manner that communicates and demonstrates the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Engage in active listening with members and program participants in order to build relationships, understand an individual's goals and interests, and take the initiative to ensure the member has a positive experience.
- Assists in implementing strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
- Demonstrate cultural competencies and respect people of all backgrounds by incorporating cultural, linguistic, and familial values and beliefs into the program and culture of the YMCA.
- Provide excellent customer service to members, and act as an example and role model for other staff. Always have a friendly, helpful attitude and wear a smile.
- Participate in special events and activities to enhance the member experience and volunteer opportunities.
- Help to promote the marketing and distribution of program information.
Volunteer/Staff Development:
- Assists in the development and orientation of personal trainers.
- Shared supervision with the Director of Healthy Living of training and providing support to all wellness floor staff.
Facility Management:
- Support the Director/ Regional Director in conducting inventory and operating supplies for the department.
- Complete weekly preventative maintenance checks on all wellness floor equipment.
- Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing all identified equipment, workspaces, and facility areas as directed.
- Works collaboratively between membership and wellness to provide a safe, welcoming environment for all.
General Functions
- Support the mission, vision, and goals of the Ann Arbor YMCA; promote character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Read all YMCA communications including but not limited to emails daily. Respond to emails & phone calls in a timely fashion and take accurate messages.
- Promote the value of diversity and the importance of being an inclusive organization to others inside and outside of the organization.
- Expected to take advantage of opportunities for self-development and growth. Attend training and conferences as assigned.
- Special projects as assigned. This is not intended to be all-inclusive. It is understood that the employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties if requested by the supervisor.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Flexible and thrives in a role interacting with members and other staff.
- Must be enrolled in WCC Master Fitness Trainer Program.
- 1-year experience in customer service is required; YMCA experience is strongly preferred.
- Ability to communicate and listen effectively as well as an aptitude for working harmoniously with a wide variety of people in a patient, professional manner.
- The ability to speak more than one language is preferred.
- Must possess excellent customer service, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to coordinate multiple responsibilities efficiently and can meet all deadlines.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
Certifications:
- Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor certification required, by a nationally accredited agency after 3 years of employment.
- Complete CPR/AED and First Aid course within 1 year of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This position will have set hours and will require occasional evenings and weekends.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to assist participants weighing up to 180 pounds.
- Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
- Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
- Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
- Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
- Ability to manage daily tasks with limited supervision.
- Ability to make necessary phone calls to new members.
- Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
Hours: Expected hours are 30 per week.
