Job Summary:

The Manager of Transportation & Road Maintenance is responsible for the strategic leadership, safety, and operational excellence of resort transportation systems and road maintenance operations. This role oversees CDL bus operations, parking access routes, snow removal, ice mitigation, and private roadway safety to ensure reliable guest and employee access throughout all seasonal conditions.

This position leads multiple teams, including transportation operations and road maintenance staff, and partners closely with Resort Operations, Town partners, Vehicle Maintenance, and Safety teams. The Manager plays a critical role in guest experience delivery, regulatory compliance, workforce development, and budget accountability across a complex, high-volume resort environment.

Job Responsibilities:

Leadership & Operations

  • Lead all transportation and road maintenance operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and guest-focused service across the resort.
  • Directly manage Assistant Managers, exempt leaders, and supervisory staff; provide mentorship, coaching, and performance management.
  • Establish operational standards, procedures, and service expectations aligned with Vail Resorts’ core values.

Transportation Operations

  • Oversee daily transportation services.
  • Ensure operational readiness during peak periods, weather events, and emergency situations.
  • Partner with Vehicle Maintenance teams to ensure fleet availability, cleanliness, and reliability.

Road Maintenance

  • Lead all base area road maintenance functions, including snow removal, sanding, de‑icing, and roadway hazard mitigation.
  • Develop and execute storm plans, including staffing models, equipment readiness, and operational coordination before, during, and after weather events.
  • Ensure all access routes, employee parking areas, guest arrival corridors, service roads, and emergency access lanes remain safe, accessible, and fully operational year‑round.
  • Oversee placement, maintenance, and repair of ski racks across the resort to support efficient guest flow and base area organization.
  • Manage trash, recycling, and compost removal operations in the base area, ensuring consistent service levels while advancing sustainability best practices.
  • Support and uphold the resort’s Commitment to Zero initiatives by aligning road maintenance, snow removal, and waste operations with Vail Resorts’ goal of achieving zero net operating emissions by 2030.

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations including USDOT, FMCSA, DISA, OSHA, and internal safety standards.
  • Oversee safety programs, incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous safety improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure Driver Qualification Files, licensing, certifications, and vehicle inspections are accurate and audit-ready.

Financial & Strategic Management

  • Develop and manage department budgets including labor, equipment, fuel, and contracted services.
  • Analyze operational performance data to drive efficiencies and cost control while maintaining service standards.
  • Contribute to capital planning, fleet strategy, and long-term infrastructure planning.

People & Culture

  • Foster a culture of engagement, accountability, inclusivity, and service excellence.
  • Lead talent acquisition, onboarding, training, and retention initiatives for year-round and seasonal staff.
  • Champion employee development, succession planning, and career growth pathways.

Partnership & Communication

  • Serve as the primary transportation and road maintenance liaison with Town partners and Resort Operations.
  • Communicate operational updates, storm response plans, and service impacts clearly and effectively.

Other Duties

  • Serve as Manager on Duty as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by senior leadership.

Job Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience in transportation, public works, logistics, or operations leadership.
  • 3+ years in a management role leading exempt leaders and large frontline teams.
  • Proven ability to lead complex, weather-dependent operations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency events.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations and safety compliance.
  • Experience in resort, mountain, municipal, or large-scale hospitality operations.
  • CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement (or ability to obtain).
  • Snow removal, road maintenance, or heavy equipment operations experience.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Extended periods outdoors during extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to respond on-site during storm events and emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and operate equipment or vehicles as needed.

The expected pay range is $58,461.98 - $77,126.78 + annual bonus. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
