The PositionThe City of Lathrop is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Maintenance Worker I in the Public Works Department. The Maintenance Worker I is the entry-levelclassin the Maintenance Worker series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, depending on Department/Division assignments, incumbents perform skilled work under immediate supervision; incumbents perform the routine and less complex assignments within an established procedural framework, where there are minimal consequences of error, including a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks in streets, parks, buildings, public facilities and utilities. Incumbents are expected to perform the full scope duties assigned.

Supervision Received/ExercisedUnder general supervision, depending on assigned Department/Division learns to perform and performs the full array of routine and complex tasks and duties assigned to classes within the Maintenance Worker series, including skilled and semi-skilled work in streets, storm drain basins, parks, buildings and public facilities; assists other staff when assigned; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs other related duties as required.
Essential FunctionsIncluding, but not limited to the following:
  • City-wide trash and graffiti abatement.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on City parks, splash pads, and facilities.
  • Maintain landscaped areas and City owned parking lots
  • Inspect and maintain playground equipment and park amenities.
  • Perform minor carpentry, plumbing, painting, and basic electrical repairs.
  • Clean and maintain restrooms and public buildings.
  • Operate light and moderately heavy equipment and hand tools.
  • Respond to vandalism, emergencies, and maintenance requests.
  • Follow established safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment.

Maintenance Worker I

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in construction, maintenance or landscape work is desirable.

License/Certificate:Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver’s license. For some vehicles, possession of a class B California driver’s license might be required. Possession of a Pesticide Applicator’s certificate issued by the state of California is desirable.APPLICATIONS

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, crawling, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The need to lift, carry, pull and push tools, supplies and other equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold. The position entails working in situations that may expose the employee to fumes or airborne particles, electrical shock or mechanical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERAll City of Lathrop employees are, by State and Federal law, Disaster Service Workers. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Labor Code. In the event of a declaration of emergency, any employee of the City may be assigned to perform activities which promote the protection of public health and safety or the preservation of lives and property. Such assignments may require service at locations, times, and under conditions that are significantly different than the normal work assignments and may continue into the recovery phase of the emergency. If a “Local Emergency” is declared during the employee’s shift, employees will be expected to remain at work to respond to the emergency needs of the community. If a “Local Emergency” is declared outside of the employee’s shift, employees must make every effort to contact their direct supervisor or department head to obtain reporting instructions as Disaster Service Workers.
