We’re looking for someone to join our parks team as a maintenance technician, helping maintain parks grounds, landscaped areas, and other public spaces. In this role, you’ll perform a variety of semi-skilled and technical maintenance and repair work on trails/trailheads, grounds/facilities, and other amenities related to Parks. Directs, oversees, and participates in work crews and inmate work crews. Work includes general grounds and greens maintenance, facility maintenance, and cleaning. This position works under the close supervision of a Parks Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

About You:
You enjoy working outdoors, take pride in keeping public spaces clean and safe, and are comfortable performing physical labor in all weather conditions. You’re reliable, safety-minded, and able to follow instructions while completing daily tasks independently or as part of a team.
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience in the care, maintenance, and operations of large commercial or public grounds and facilities, preferably with a municipality.
  • Any combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Must have complete training requirements as required by the State and Federal governments, including those required by the OSHA Hazard Communications Standard.
  • Obtain certification as a Certified Playground Safety Inspector through the National Parks and Recreation Association within twelve (12) months of placement in the position.
  • Valid Arizona state driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 6 (six) months.

Grounds, Trail & Facility Maintenance (40%) -In this position, you will perform a variety of trail maintenance/repair work related to the care and maintenance of the City’s trails/trailheads. Duties includegrounds and trail maintenance skills, including, but not limited to, mowing, trimming, planting, weeding, pruning, and fertilization. Additionally, you may perform the functions and duties of a Groundskeeper as required and assigned, including routine maintenance and janitorial work on recreation facilities and grounds.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance (30%) - In this role, you will operate various types of equipment and machinery, such as a boom lift, backhoe, front loader, dump bed, tampers, forklifts, jackhammers, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, other small equipment, and power/hand tools. This includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring proper handling and documentation of equipment and materials. You will also be responsible forgeneral maintenance and custodial practices of equipment, materials, and supplies used in building, grounds, and trail maintenance.

Project Coordination & Crew Leadership (20%) - You will be responsible for planning, organizing, and leading big projects, such as new amenities and park construction, inmate trail projects, and maintenance. Lead and oversee work crews, including assigning tasks and ensuring projects are completed efficiently. Plan and support construction and maintenance projects, coordinate with other departments, and assist with special projects and events. Additionally, you will be responsible for making recommendations to supervisory staff of repairs required beyond your capabilities.

Communication, Safety & Administrative Responsibilities (10%) – Communicate effectively with team members and the public, provide customer service, maintain records and documentation, and support departmental communication efforts. Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts. This includes managing and implementing interdepartmental notifications, such as through media channels like Facebook. In addition, you will be responsible for promoting and performingall work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures while working in a safe manner, and reporting unsafe activity and conditions.
