Job Description

This Level 2 Maintenance Technician role focuses on performing both mechanical and electrical maintenance on production machinery and plant equipment in a plastics recycling and manufacturing environment. You will troubleshoot and repair older extruders, corrugators, and molding machines, perform welding and fabrication work, and support the reliability of 24/7 operations through preventative and corrective maintenance. The position is multi-craft, with an emphasis on mechanical work while also providing cross-training and exposure to electrical systems and PLC troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance on production machinery and plant equipment, including extruders, corrugators, and molding machines.
  • Troubleshoot and repair older machines used to recycle plastic bottles into finished products, ensuring minimal downtime and reliable operation.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot PLCs, including systems from Allen-Bradley and Automation Direct, to support machine controls and automation.
  • Perform MIG and TIG welding to repair, modify, and fabricate machine components and plant structures as needed.
  • Operate mill and lathe equipment within the maintenance department to fabricate and repair parts for machinery and equipment.
  • Work with and replace 240 VAC and 480 VAC heaters used on production equipment, following proper safety procedures.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot 480V and 3-phase motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and sensors.
  • Work with pneumatic systems and components, and support some hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to diagnose issues and perform accurate repairs.
  • Perform mechanical troubleshooting on equipment, identifying root causes of failures and implementing effective solutions.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on machinery and plant equipment according to established schedules and procedures.
  • Document maintenance activities, repairs, and parts usage to support maintenance planning and reliability improvements.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance technicians and production staff to prioritize work, coordinate downtime, and support safe, efficient operations.
  • Support a multi-craft maintenance approach by assisting with both mechanical and basic electrical tasks and participating in cross-training.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment, and help maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Be available to work a 12-hour 2-2-3 shift schedule, including every other weekend as part of the rotation, and participate in voluntary overtime when available.

Essential Skills

  • At least 4 years of industrial maintenance, millwright, or fabrication experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proficiency with MIG and TIG welding for repair and fabrication work.
  • Hands-on experience operating a mill and lathe to repair or fabricate machine parts.
  • Knowledge of working with 240 VAC and 480 VAC heaters on production equipment.
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills, including working with 480V and 3-phase systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical components on industrial machinery.
  • Experience working with 480V and 3-phase motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and sensors.
  • Experience working with pneumatic systems and familiarity with hydraulic systems.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a multi-craft role, with a primary focus on mechanical work while being cross-trained in electrical tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Comfort working on older machinery and adapting to non-standard or legacy equipment setups.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts on a 2-2-3 schedule, including every other weekend.

Work Environment

The role is based at a large manufacturing plant with over 130 employees on site, focused on recycling plastic bottles into finished products. The facility operates 24/7 on a 2-2-3 shift schedule across four shifts (A, B, C, D), with 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. for days and 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. for nights. One opening is available on day shift and two openings are available on night shift. You will work every other weekend as part of the standard rotation, and additional overtime may be available on a voluntary basis to cover absences and staffing needs. The environment includes both indoor and outdoor work areas and can be dirty, cold, wet, or hot at times; the plant is heated in the winter but does not have air conditioning, so temperatures can rise during summer months. Safety is a priority, with required use of bump caps, hearing protection, and eye protection, all provided by the company. Steel-toe boots that are at least 6 inches high and made of leather are required. You will work alongside a team of eight maintenance technicians who support production equipment through 12-hour shifts, using a variety of tools, welding equipment, mills, lathes, and electrical test instruments to maintain and repair machinery in a fast-paced industrial setting.
