Maintenance Planner Job Description


1st shift @ 7:30A -3:30pm (some overtime and weekends may be required)

Position Summary

The Maintenance Planner is responsible for planning, estimating, and coordinating maintenance work to improve workforce productivity, equipment reliability, and maintenance efficiency. This role develops detailed job plans, ensures parts/material availability, and supports execution through effective scheduling using CMMS systems such as Maintenance Connection/SAP/Maximo/ECT...

The Planner works closely with Maintenance, Production, and MRO to ensure planned work is ready for execution, minimizing downtime and reactive maintenance.


Key Responsibilities

  • Work Planning & Scheduling
  • Develop detailed job plans including estimated labor, materials, tools, permits, and safety requirements
  • Build and maintain a prioritized backlog of maintenance work
  • Plan and schedule preventive maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance (PdM), and corrective work
  • Coordinate weekly scheduling with Maintenance and Production teams
  • Improve planned vs. unplanned work ratio
  • CMMS & Data Management
  • Serve as system champion for CMMS (e.g., Maintenance Connection)
  • Create, update, and optimize PMs, job plans, and asset hierarchies
  • Ensure accurate work order history, failure codes, and asset data
  • Drive continuous improvement of work order quality and standardization
  • Materials & Inventory Coordination
  • Identify and reserve parts required for planned work
  • Coordinate with storeroom to ensure material availability prior to scheduling
  • Support spare parts optimization and critical spares identification
  • Assist with cycle counts and inventory accuracy initiatives
  • Vendor & Contractor Coordination
  • Plan and coordinate external contractor work
  • Develop scopes of work and ensure compliance with site requirements
  • Track contractor performance and documentation
  • Reliability & Continuous Improvement
  • Support reliability initiatives such as: Asset criticality analysis, PM optimization, Root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Working Knowledge on Predictive and condition-based Technologies
  • Drive improvements in: Schedule compliance, Wrench time, Equipment uptime, Cross-Functional Communication
  • Act as liaison between Maintenance, Production, and Purchasing
  • Ensure alignment on priorities, downtime windows, and resource allocation

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of industrial maintenance practices in manufacturing
  • Experience with CMMS platforms (e.g., Maintenance Connection, SAP PM, Maximo, etc.)
  • Ability to read technical manuals, equipment drawings, and schematics
  • Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel required/word/Power BI)
  • Desired Certifications: CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) – Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals or CRL (Certified Reliability Leader) – Association for Asset Management Professionals or CPIM (Certified in Planning and Inventory Management) – APICS or Lean / Six Sigma (Green Belt preferred) or other industry recognized Maintenance planning Certifications


Education & Experience

High School Diploma or GED required

Associate’s or Technical Degree in Industrial Maintenance, Engineering Technology, or related field

3–5+ years of experience in: Maintenance planning or Industrial maintenance

Knowledge of Manufacturing/Maintenance/Reliability operations Key Performance Indicators
