Howmet is currently looking for a Maintenance Mechanic to join our Industrial Gas Turbine (IGT) group in Hampton, Virginia. Training is 1st shift, M-F 7am-3pm. The shift hours are to be determined upon training completion.

New Hire Starting Rate: $34.64 p/hr. This position will receive an hourly “shift premium” of $1.00 p/hr. while assigned to an off shift.

Job Summary: The Maintenance Mechanic will install, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment, physical structures, and piping systems of industrial equipment and facilities. 

Essential Functions & Job Responsibilities:

  • Ability to read and follow the information on work instructions.
  • Record data either manually or by computer as required.
  • Assist with testing and repair of equipment.
  • Test malfunctioning equipment and discuss machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem and assist with repairs, as directed.
  • Assist with the dismantling of machines and equipment and installs new or repaired parts, as directed.
  • Assist with the facility preventive machine procedures.
  • Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment, as directed.
  • Operates cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
  • Fabricates and repairs counters, benches, partitions, and other wooden structures.
  • Rigs equipment for installation or relation, as directed.
  • Must be familiar with and provide all types of hand tools as required.
  • Must be able to read basic blueprints to install equipment and components.
  • Ability to operate an industrial forklift.
  • Must be able to work in varying heights up to and including 50 feet.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Forklift License required with renewal every two years. Confined space entry certification with recertification every year.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondences. 
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts, such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
