The 2nd Shift CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines to produce precision parts and components. This role requires the ability to interpret technical drawings, ensure high-quality standards, and optimize machining processes for efficiency and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC machines (mills, lathes, routers) to produce parts according to specifications
  • Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD models
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and materials for each job
  • Perform machine setup including offsets, tool changes, and program adjustments
  • Monitor machine operations to ensure quality and efficiency
  • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges)
  • Maintain tight tolerances and ensure compliance with quality standards
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and make necessary adjustments
  • Perform routine maintenance on machines and equipment
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Document production and quality data as required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certification preferred
  • 2+ years of CNC machining experience (level may vary: junior to senior)
  • Proficiency with CNC controls (e.g., Fanuc, Haas, Mazak)
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Strong understanding of machining processes and materials (metals, plastics)
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments
  • Basic math and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CNC programming (G-code or CAM software such as Mastercam)
  • Background in aerospace, defense, or high-precision manufacturing
  • Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma experience
  • Ability to work with tight tolerances and complex geometries

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Lift up to 50 lbs as needed
  • Manual dexterity and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment (noise, machinery, etc.)

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing/shop floor setting
  • May require shift work, overtime, or weekend hours depending on production needs
