Job Title: Machine Operator – 2nd and 3rd Shift
Job Description

This role operates modern, digitally controlled wire processing machinery to respoool, coat, and draw steel wire to precise customer specifications. You will set up and change over equipment, monitor quality, perform basic maintenance, and keep accurate production records in a clean, safety-focused manufacturing environment. Extensive on-the-job training is provided, starting on 1st shift for 4–6 weeks before transitioning to a permanent 2nd or 3rd shift assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate digital controlled respooling and drawing machinery and auxiliary equipment to produce high-quality wire products that meet customer specifications and production goals.
  • Load large spools of raw wire material, correctly feed wire through the machinery, and safely remove finished product from the line.
  • Change machinery over from one product or package to another, including making adjustments for different wire sizes, coatings, and packaging requirements.
  • Perform quality welds using appropriate butt welders for various wire types and sizes to ensure strong, consistent joints.
  • Carry out operator-level preventive maintenance on production and support equipment as assigned to maintain reliable machine performance.
  • Adjust equipment, with guidance from management and production supervisors, to achieve the most efficient and optimal operation.
  • Maintain accurate production and quality records, including measurements taken with tape measures, micrometers, and calipers using the metric system.
  • Understand and monitor product quality, delivery requirements, and scrap measurements, and take action to minimize scrap and rework.
  • Operate machinery in an efficient, steady manner to meet or exceed daily production targets while maintaining quality standards.
  • Operate in a safe manner at all times by following all safety procedures and policies and consistently wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards so that the next operator can work in a safe and orderly environment.
  • Participate in OSHA-approved forklift training and safely operate a forklift as an essential part of daily tasks, maintaining a valid forklift license.
  • Use standard problem-solving methods to troubleshoot equipment or process issues and effectively communicate with support personnel to resolve problems.
  • Apply common-sense methods when following written and oral instructions to ensure tasks are completed accurately and safely.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with changing priorities, collaborating with coworkers and support staff as needed.
  • Participate in training sessions, employee meetings, committees, and project teams as appropriate to support continuous improvement.
  • Perform visual inspections of wire and finished products to identify defects, inconsistencies, or quality issues and take corrective action.
  • Follow lockout/tagout and other safety protocols when required to ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assist with machine setup, including installing dies, making mechanical adjustments, and verifying correct settings before production runs.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support production, quality, and safety goals.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of experience working in an industrial facility with machine or production experience.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort working with industrial machinery and tools.
  • Experience with machine operation in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate in English.
  • Willingness to learn how to read tape measures, micrometers, and calipers and to work with the metric measurement system.
  • Ability to perform simple mental math (addition and subtraction of three-digit numbers) and use a calculator for more complex calculations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems using standard problem-solving methods and effectively direct support personnel in resolving issues.
  • Capability to apply common-sense methods when following written and oral instructions.
  • Physical ability to regularly push, pull, roll items, and lift up to 70 pounds and perform all essential work-related physical demands.
  • Willingness and ability to complete and pass OSHA-approved forklift training and maintain a valid forklift license.
  • Proven job tenure and a stable work history in machine operation or similar roles.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Technical school education or vocational training in a mechanical, industrial, or related field is a plus.
  • Experience with machine setup and changeovers in a production environment.
  • Familiarity with lockout/tagout and other industrial safety protocols.
  • Previous experience operating forklifts in a manufacturing or warehouse setting.
  • Ability to use measurement tools such as tape measures, micrometers, and calipers with accuracy.
  • Experience performing visual inspections and documenting quality checks.
  • Prior exposure to welding, including butt welding, is beneficial.
  • Comfort working with digital and modern industrial control systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small-team environment with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing consistent, high-quality work.

Work Environment

The facility operates multiple shifts with approximately 12–15 employees on 1st shift, including maintenance, and about 3–4 employees on 2nd shift, creating a close-knit, small-shop atmosphere. The environment is a typical manufacturing setting focused on processing large steel wire spools through modern, digitally controlled machinery. The shop is very organized, with a strong emphasis on cleanliness and safety, supported by clear procedures and preventive maintenance practices. Work is performed on 1st shift (6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Monday–Friday) during the initial 4–6 weeks of training, with ongoing roles on 2nd shift (2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m., Monday–Friday) or 3rd shift (10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m., Sunday–Thursday). Safety-toed shoes and ear protection are required, and employees regularly work around industrial equipment, forklifts, and wire-handling systems in a fast-paced production environment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $24.00/hr.
