LIFT STATION MECHANIC TRAINEE - INTERNAL - [FLSA: Non-exempt; 8 hrs/day, 5 days/week]

Under close supervision, the purpose of this position is to perform entry-level work in support of Collections Division Lift Station Mechanics. Work involves assisting with the preventative and corrective maintenance and repairs at City lift stations. Trainee will work with Lift Station Mechanics to learn safe electrical work principles and practices in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining lift station electrical panels, SCADA, generators, and bypass pumps. Assists with the maintenance and repairs of all gravity sewer lines and force mains. Assists Collections personnel as assigned in non-lift station maintenance or repairs. Performs other duties as assigned or may be necessary. Reports to Collections Utilities Supervisor. Trains in the proper procedures, skills, and techniques used to monitor, maintain, repair, replace, and install lift station SCADA systems.

Performs skilled work assisting Lift Station Mechanics perform diagnostic measurements and gathering data using digital and analog volt/ohm meters, temperature and pressure gauges, and digital calipers.

Assists Lift Station Mechanic in the maintenance of instrumentation devices such as pump control units, telemetry control units, flow meters, level control devices, and gauges.

Trains in the installation, troubleshooting, and repair of piping, valves, pumps motors, process equipment and electrical controls, working with up to 480 volts of electricity.

Assists with the repair of lift stations and other wastewater facilities.

Works with Lift Station crews in response to emergency work orders for lift station alarms, sewer backups, and distribution water issues for residential and commercial customers.

Performs preventative maintenance on pumps, gate valves, check valves, plug valves and their associated fixtures.

Assists in the inspection and location of sewer lines.

Works with Lift Station Mechanics in the installation and maintenance of pumps, valves, and other appurtenances utilizing crane truck.

Trains in the operation of Jet-Vac truck to clean and pump out wells, manholes, and gravity sewer lines.

Prepares preventative maintenance records and reports.

Maintains and repairs Air Release Valves.

Reads lift station, alternative water, and sewer meters.

Maintains alternative water pump stations and wells.

Maintains property in, and around, lift stations.

Serves as essential personnel during natural or man-made disasters and emergencies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Must be 18 years of age. Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent with specialized vocational training. Requires a minimum of one (1) year of experience in construction and maintenance work. Experience in the maintenance and/or repair of mechanics, electrical systems, pumps, motors, etc. is preferred.

Must have a valid State of Florida driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Must be able to work on-call as needed and determined by department.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Within two (2) years of assignment to position, trainee will promote to Lift Station Mechanic once the following conditions/requirements have been met.

  • Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement.
  • Florida Class C Collection Technician certification
  • Successful completion of University of Florida TREEO Electrical course Intro to Electrical Maintenance
  • Two (2) years of experience with mechanical repair including electrical pumps and related equipment and experience with troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing, SCADA and telemetry controls. The two years of experience may be met with a combination of documented prior experience and experience obtained in Trainee position.
The two (2) year period may be extended, if necessary, at the discretion of supervision. Under no circumstances will the trainee status extend beyond 2 ½ years.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to read, interpret, and understand maps, schematic diagrams, CAD drawings, and blueprints.

Experience working with hand tools, power tools, and electronic test equipment.

Basic knowledge of methods and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment and machinery.

Basic knowledge of safety hazards involved with working with high-voltage electricity and the necessary precautions.

Ability to read and comprehend operations and maintenance manuals, City policies, and procedure, technical manuals, and specifications.

Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.

Ability to understand and follow specific oral and/or written instructions.

Ability to read and write in English.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

Ability to adapt and perform under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
