- Exercises required supervision to ensure that the institution's safety program, buildings, employee and inmate functions, public property, etc., are managed so that a safe environment is maintained.
- Provides guidance and consultation to institutional personnel, including security, to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and programs relevant to an effective environmental health and safety program.
- Instructs and trains staff and inmates and makes inspections to ensure that they properly perform all assigned duties and post procedures in a safe manner.
- Directs and supervises an inspection program to detect and correct shortcomings and deficiencies in building contents, grounds, security, vehicles, sanitation, and maintenance.
- Investigates reported hazards; accidents, fire and other incidents or conditions which impact health, welfare and safety of employees and inmates.
- Ensures control and proper use of all hazardous and toxic materials and contaminants in accordance with policy.

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
