Purpose:The veterinary technician works directly with the staff Veterinarians and the Practice Manager toensure quality standards of patient care and to aid the veterinarian in achieving greaterefficiency by relieving them of technical work and ensuring appropriate workflow. The LeadVeterinary Technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals includingphysical examinations, dental procedures, surgeries, immunizations, euthanasia, performingvarious lab tests, as well as staff and client education, marketing, and collaborating on inventorymanagement to include controlled substances. . This position requires a working knowledge ofpharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatmentand prevention, and other basic preventative health care recommendations. It also requires theability to lead, coach and guide the clinical team.Key ResponsibilitiesVeterinary Technician: Provide client care in a calm, compassionate manner, by always treating them with the utmostrespect and consideration. Receive, handle, and treat patients with skill, compassion, ACCURACY, and care. Maintain up to date knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations to answer clientquestions, provide education on vaccines, flea and heartworm products, and assist in marketingveterinary services from which their pet would benefit, such as a dental cleaning, seniorwellness, and spay and neuter procedures. Create estimates/treatment plans and communicate them effectively and thoroughly, withconfidence, to clients. Perform client callbacks in a timely manner. Maintain legally defensible medical records in conjunction with staff veterinarians.Obtain and accurately record patient history and vital signs in the medical recordfor all patients.Document all communications with owner, outside pharmacies and referralveterinarians in the record. Perform treatments, administer medications and vaccinations as ordered by the staffveterinarian. Administer IV fluid therapy as prescribed.Use/maintain IV pumps to include administering boluses and CRIs. Administer and accurately monitor anesthesia procedures under the direction of the staffveterinarian. Provide specialized care for sick and injured animals. Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors,and breathing apparatus are in good working condition. Take radiographs processes rads, demonstrates proper positioning techniques andpresentation. Assist the Inventory Manager with inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies.Unpack and record deliveries in accordance with the inventory specialists standardoperating procedures. Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures and tests in hematology,biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology to assist in the diagnosis andtreatment of animal health problems. Assist in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures using a range of high-tech diagnosticequipment including electrocardiographic, radiograph and ultrasound equipment. Report diagnostic testing to veterinarians. Maintain quality controls and record keeping on in-house lab equipment. Complete proper sample preparation and paperwork for reference lab tests. Fill prescriptions per veterinarians instructions; double-check for accuracy. Admit patients scheduled for anesthetic procedures. Keep surgical materials stocked; prepare gown and surgical packs or oversee this process. Check oxygen lines and waste gas scavenger system; before and after surgical proceduresare completed. Prepare the surgery suite for surgery in collaboration with surgery assistant. Prepare instruments; know the type of surgical instruments required for specific surgeries. Perform induction/intubation on anesthetic patients. Perform pre-surgical scrubbing and preparations for surgical patients including specialtyprocedures. Monitor patients post-operatively. Log controlled substances and ensure adequate inventory. Clean surgery suite and instruments following hospital sterilization protocols.o Can be assigned to an assistant to be done under the supervision of a technician. Keep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical records. Accurately calculate and record all medications and injections administered. Input data into computer software systems.. Ensure all surgery patients go home well-groomed and in an appropriate medical state. Clean, scale, and polish teeth using dental equipment and hand instruments. Record dental problems in record and report to the veterinarian. Assist veterinarians with performing oral extractions or other dental procedures. Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms, surgery suite, treatment area, all surfaces. Maintain equipment cleanliness and longevity by vacuuming pet hair from equipment andwheels. Regulatory ComplianceFollow OSHA requirements/laws.Follow practices health and safety protocols.Maintain the SDS manual and follow proper protocols.Be knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal health laws andregulations including OSHA and DEA; ensure everyone complies; inform PracticeManager of any regulatory issues.ExpectationsAssist the client care specialist with answering phones, checking in patients, andmeeting client needs.Regular attendance and timeliness are essential functions to fulfill therequirements of this position.Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support thehospital, the doctors, and the practice philosophy.Participate in facilitating your own professional growth and development..Oversee PCAS voucher program and invoicing in collaboration with the PracticeManagerOversee AAP accurate AAP records and invoicing in collaboration with thePractice Manager.Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Associate degree in applied science (veterinary technology) preferred, but not required. In lieuof the A.S degree and certification, a minimum of 5 years of experience in general practice willbe considered.Experience A minimum of 2 years of experience in a leadership position is required.Skills and abilities: Able to calculate simple and complex medical math.
