Block is the proud winner of two Photonics West Prism Awards and the Milipol Paris Innovation Award. The company is headquartered in Southborough, Massachusetts in the greater Boston metro area.


Block is seeking a hands-on Lead Mechanical Engineer to help lead the development of Block’s mid-infrared lasers and spectrometers. Work will include the development of commercial products and the transition of R&D projects into manufacturing.


The position will be on-site at Block Engineering’s office in Southborough, MA.


Responsibilities will include:


  • Lead the mechanical and opto-mechanical product development efforts for laser systems and spectrometers, including product design activities.
  • Supervise consultants and external design resources as needed.
  • Lead DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing/Assembly) initiatives and cost-reduction/size-reduction efforts for all commercial products.
  • Model system performance (thermal, etc.) to ensure field-based environmental conditions will be met.
  • Collaborate closely with product management, scientists, electrical engineers, and software engineers.
  • Conduct and present technical design reviews.
  • Assist with government R&D programs by collaborating with the Director of Government Programs to support engineering and prototyping requirements. 


Required Skills and Experience:


  • BSME with at least 8 years of experience designing mechanical/electro-mechanical products and systems. MSME is a plus.
  • Expertise in SolidWorks with strong 3D modeling and mechanical drawing skills. CSWP certification is a plus.
  • SolidWorks PDM experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience developing and commercializing ruggedized products, including cost reduction and DFM efforts.
  • Hands-on proficiency with machine tools and comfort working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ideally, the candidate will have experience with the following as well: structural design, thermal analysis, materials selection, manufacturing processes (machining, sheet metal, 3D printing, etc.)
