Lathe / Mill Operator (Manual or CNC)
Location:Houston, TX 77032
Shift:8am-5pm, Overtime as needed
Pay Rate:$20-$24 DOE
Role Objective
To set up and operate various machine tools to produce precision components for screw conveyors and bulk handling systems. This role requires the "hands-on" mechanical skill needed for industrial fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Setup & Operation:Configure, operate, and troubleshoot lathes and/or Mills to turn, face, drill, and groove materials.
- Precision Machining:Perform turning, boring, threading, facing, and drilling on various materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and high-tensile alloys.
- Blueprint Interpretation:Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and CAD prints to determine dimensions, tolerances, and machining sequences.
- Quality Inspection:Use precision tools (micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and thread gages) to ensure parts meet tolerances before they move to the assembly/welding stage.
- Tooling & Maintenance:Select proper cutting tools and inserts; adjust feeds and speeds to optimize finish and tool life. Perform daily preventative maintenance on machines.
Technical Skills & Qualifications
- Experience:2–5+ years of experience in a machine shop environment. Experience withheavy-duty industrial parts(large shafts or pipes) is a major plus.
- Technical Knowledge:Understanding of metal properties, cutting speeds, and feed rates.
- Technical Skills:Proficiency with manual lathe operation, including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Material Knowledge:Experience machining diverse metals such asA36 Carbon Steel,304/316 Stainless, andAR400(Abrasion Resistant) steels.
- Equipment:Experience with overhead cranes and jib cranes is highly preferred, as many components (like 20-foot conveyor shafts) are too heavy for manual lifting.
- Math Skills:Strong math skills for calculating dimensions and machine settings and the ability to convert between Metric and Imperial systems.
Physical Requirements & Environment
- Physical Stamina:Ability to stand for 8–10 hours andlift up to 50 lbs
- Safety First: Must adhereto strict PPE requirements (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hearing protection).
- Work Environment:Non-climate-controlled manufacturing plant (standard for Houston-area heavy fabrication).
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED certificate.
- Completion of a machinist apprenticeship or technical program or equivalent work experience
