Job Description

The Lab Assistant supports a variety of short- and long-term projects in an R&D laboratory setting with minimal supervision from a Bacteriophage Scientist. This hands-on role focuses on media and reagent preparation, basic microbiology techniques, and maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment. The position offers exposure to both research and development and manufacturing activities, with opportunities to learn and grow under the guidance of an experienced scientist.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment, including cleaning glassware and maintaining cleanliness of hoods.
  • Conduct regular equipment validation and maintenance checks to ensure proper operation and reliability.
  • Prepare media and reagents in volumes appropriate for weekly workload requirements, following established procedures.
  • Assist the Bacteriophage Scientist in drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new protocols and methods.
  • Comply with SOPs, batch records, and controlled documentation in all laboratory activities.
  • Ensure compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations, guidelines, and safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members across departments to compile, analyze, and interpret data from experiments and assays.
  • Perform essential laboratory techniques such as pipetting, weighing, serial dilutions, and plating as required for assays.
  • Support research and development and quality control activities, including media/reagent preparation and assay support.
  • Maintain familiarity with current scientific literature and contribute to intra- and interdepartmental projects.
  • Apply good documentation practices (GDP) to record data accurately, precisely, and reproducibly.
  • Use autoclaves and other laboratory equipment as needed for media sterilization and laboratory workflows.
  • Carry out other related laboratory duties and tasks as assigned to support ongoing projects and operations.

Essential Skills

  • Associate’s Degree with a focus in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of related laboratory experience, which may include academic experience, ideally in a microbiology lab.
  • Solid foundation in microbiology and familiarity with basic microbiology techniques.
  • Proficiency in media and reagent preparation for laboratory assays.
  • Competency in essential laboratory techniques, including pipetting, weighing, and performing serial dilutions.
  • Ability to perform basic laboratory mathematics and unit conversions accurately.
  • Experience in laboratory work within microbiology, biology, biochemistry, or chemistry.
  • Familiarity with creating media and reagents according to established protocols.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accurate, precise, and reproducible data.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Results-driven and task-oriented approach with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments to compile, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a related field is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Quality Control principles and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
  • Experience with autoclave operation and maintenance for media and equipment sterilization.
  • Experience with phage biology, including basic understanding of bacteriophages.
  • Experience with aseptic techniques and sterile handling of media and cultures.
  • Prior experience in media or reagent preparation in an R&D or manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with good documentation practices (GDP) in a regulated laboratory setting.
  • Interest in working at the interface of research and development and manufacturing, with a desire to learn new techniques.
  • Ability to stay current with scientific literature relevant to microbiology, bacteriophages, and related fields.

Work Environment

This role is based in an R&D laboratory environment that also supports manufacturing-related activities. The Lab Assistant works closely with a Bacteriophage Scientist who is experienced and open to training and mentoring. The schedule is a standard day shift, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Work involves routine use of laboratory equipment such as hoods, autoclaves, and basic analytical instruments, as well as handling media, reagents, and microbiological materials. The setting emphasizes safety, cleanliness, compliance with cGMP and SOPs, and accurate documentation. The position starts as a contract role with the potential for extension based on performance, offering meaningful exposure to both research and development and manufacturing processes in a collaborative, learning-focused environment.

This is a Contract position based out of Kennesaw, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
