Definition: Under the general supervision of the Salt River Pima – Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) Information Technology Department IT Assistant Director (Application Systems), the IT Project Manager I is responsible for the successful completion of assigned IT projects. Works with the IT department staff and clients to complete assigned implementations of new IT systems and/or system upgrade projects. Guides IT resources towards ultimate client business solutions and ensures proper project planning, resources scheduling, project budget management, project evaluation and client satisfaction. This job class is treated as FLSA exempt.

Distinguishing Features: The IT Project Manager I is distinguished from the IT Project Manager II and Senior IT Project Manager by focus on specific assigned implementation projects rather than overall Department/Division responsibilities. Provides assistant to the Senior Project Manager in successfully completing all IT projects.

1. Works with Senior IT Project Manager to ensure organizational project management standards are adhered to and continuously improved.

2. Works with the Senior IT Project Manager and IT management staff to determine, document, and manage project scope and objectives.

3. Establishes preliminary project design requirements and coordinates preparation of preliminary cost estimates. Visually analyzes plans to determine conformance with Community requirements. Seeks creative opportunities to improve original project intent.

4. Assists in assembling a project team composed of IT staff and consultants. Facilitates the advancement of projects through various phases of project implementation. Personifies leadership and promotes shared responsibility among the team. Continually seeks to further group empowerment and conflict resolution.

5. Functions as a unit team leader to assist in coordinating work and developing functional and technical team leads. Organizes and manages interdepartmental activities to maintain project status and schedule.

6. Resolves problems, manages the consultant selection and management process, reviews preliminary design reports and prepares project status reports for project sponsors, management and Tribal Government Administration.

7. Takes ownership of project budget and schedule, prepares monthly status reports and presents project status reports to customers, sponsors, management and Administration. Commits to a quality project.

8. Thinks creatively and is driven by opportunities to continually improve. Listens and communicates effectively with a diverse group of people.

9. Supervise the various phases of application systems analysis, development, coordination, implementation, and documentation for enterprise application implementation projects. Ensures user applications and sub-system activities are compatible with total system objectives.

10. Assumes responsibility for systems planning, the review of designs of computer systems to ensure all requirements are satisfied and that conflicts are reconciled within and between staff regarding resources, deadlines and standards. Resolves of the most difficult computer and applications related problems.

11. Procures and accepts project related equipment, software and any other required purchases for the IT and customer department.

12. Evaluates overall and individual work performance to determine effectiveness in providing quality products within time and cost restraints.

13. Monitors time and dollar expenditures to ensure projects and budgets meet established targets.

14. Ensure efficient and effective procedures are utilized.

15. Evaluates recommendations and provides needed training.

16. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

17. Performs other IT job related tasks as assigned by the IT Director/CIO or IT Assistant Directors.

  • Knowledge of IT Project Management including project design, cost estimates, deliverables, design review, design reports, project status reports, etc.

A four-year degree from an accredited college or university in Information Systems/Technology, Management of Information Systems, Computer Science, or compatible discipline is required. 5 years’ experience in a computer related industry required including experience in the following areas:

  1. (3) Years working in Information Technology environment assessing end-user requirements for IT equipment and application systems.
  2. (3) Years project management experience.
  3. Professional Project Management (PMP) Certification desired.
  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours at times including night, weekends and holidays.
