PURPOSE

The Database Manager leads the design, operation, and optimization of enterprise database platforms, ensuring performance, integrity, availability, and security of data across business systems and internally developed applications. This role supervises database personnel, manages projects deliverables, and provides hands-on technical leadership within the database function.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Database Operations & Performance: Maintain database performance by troubleshooting issues, optimizing/tuning, ensuring scheduled jobs run successfully, implementing new releases, completing maintenance requirements, and supporting platform upgrades/improvements (including supervising system programming).
  • Security, Standards & Compliance: Secure databases by developing/enforcing policies, procedures, and controls; define database security, backup, and recovery specifications; maintain data standards and compliance (including the Data Protection Act); ensure strict confidentiality (financial data, HIPAA, IT operational systems, casino & hotel policies, marketing plans).
  • Systems Design & Development: Design and implement new systems and database applications by developing architecture, programming, troubleshooting, and security; lead the development, installation, and testing of in-house software; support database functions by designing/coding utilities; define database physical structure and functional capabilities.
  • Planning, Reporting & Upgrades: Prepare for database expansion by reviewing plans/requirements, advising senior technical management, and coordinating design/programming; keep leadership informed through performance/problem reports; recommend hardware/software upgrades based on system and database requirements.
  • Documentation & Incident Response: Write and maintain database documentation (data flowcharts, data standards, procedures, and data dictionary/metadata); troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur (including after-hours/weekends).
  • Leadership & Communication: Supervise gaming application administration by the Gaming DBAs; ensure effective communication across department staff; hold meetings and conduct team member evaluations and performance management meetings.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Support overall departmental and property priorities by completing additional responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. An additional two (2) years of applicable experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Five (5) years of experience in Information Technologies within an equivalent-sized property.
  • Three (3) years of experience leading technical staff in a supervisory or manager role, including experience managing a DBA team.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Database & Platform Expertise: Enterprise MSSQL administration/support (performance tuning, backup/restore/recovery, indexing/statistics); SQL Server HA/DR knowledge (clustering/failover, RTO); experience with SSAS/SSIS/SSRS and Tableau Server/Desktop install, configuration, upgrades, and maintenance.
  • Infrastructure & Automation: Windows Server experience including Active Directory integration and disk/storage configuration; scripting/automation to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Communication, Documentation & Vendor Coordination: Strong written/oral communication and documentation skills; able to clearly communicate system configurations and requirements to vendors.
  • Organization, Collaboration & Problem-Solving: Strong organization in IT standards/systems/procedures; collaborative, team-oriented, analytical problem-solver; comfortable resolving conflicting viewpoints and building consensus.
  • Execution Under Pressure: Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize and deliver in high-pressure environments.
