Student Trainees are full-time students that work part-time during the school year and full-time during their breaks and summer as their schedules allow and their supervisor determines appropriate based on business need.Many interns return for a second 9-month internship or become full time employees with CDOT or the State of Colorado.
Intern will begin to work in early/mid June, once spring term is completed. Temporary employees accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, capped at 48 hours.

About the Work Unit
The Property Management group at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) manages CDOT owned buildings and Fixed Asset Properties statewide. Property Management has hundresds of leases scanned by CDOT's Records Management department
About the Position
The Property Management group is seeking to fill an internship (Student Trainee III) position for Building and Fixed Asset Property tracking and inventory of these assets statewide, and GIS data collection and inventory management. The purpose of this internship is to provide a meaningful professional program, GIS and asset management experience to eligible candidates with a proven academic performance and a strong desire to learn and contribute. This position will use mobile application to visit, grade and collect information on all of CDOT's 1200 buildings statewide. This position will work with CDOT Staff to reset the data collection terminal to allow for current year collection to include, assisting in deployment, real-time testing and necessary reconfigurations of mobile application.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Collect CDOT Building and Facilities system data in the field;
- Establish weekly assessment and travel schedules;
- Visit CDOT maintenance sites across the State alongside CDOT employees;
- Use ArcGIS Pro to digitize CDOT real property parcel data;
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
- Travel required during summer throughout the State of Colorado
- Overnight travel 4-5 nights per week during summer throughout the State of Colorado, beginning on Sunday night
- Week long trips occur roughly every other week
- This position is based out of CDOT Headquarters, 2829 W. Howard Place, Denver CO 80204 (Must be based in Denver/Metro area)
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Minimum Qualifications
Qualified candidates must be either be:
- Any college student enrolled in a U.S. accredited community college, college, or university seeking an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in an area related to GIS, Architecture, Construction Management, Urban Studies, Planning, Engineering or a closely or a related field .
OR
- A recent college graduate. Recently graduated means you should have attended an accredited college or university and have graduated with an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in GIS, Architecture, Construction Management, Urban Studies, Planning, Engineering or a closely related field within the past three calendar years.
OR- A certified participant in the Colorado Refugee Services Program

The Exceptional Candidatewill be will be interested in building asset management in a transportation related organization and has proven accomplishments in the following:
- Strong interest in the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;

- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe, Acrobat, Gmail and the ability to quickly learn other software systems;
- Knowledge of standard construction practices and materials;
- Experience with ESRI ArcGIS products;

- Completion of 60 credit hours or more in an accredited university in GIS, Architecture, Construction Management, Urban Studies and/or Planning or Engineering;
- Knowledge and experience with documenting processes and operations;
- Must be reliable and trustworthy;
- Excellent interpersonal skills;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Strong analytical skills;
- Ability to perform duties with little or no supervision.
