WSP is currently initiating a search for a POWER Testing and Energization (PTE) Intermediate P&C Field Services Technician for our project locations in Texas and the surrounding states. Successful applicants will be involved in projects with our PTE Team and be a part of a growing organization that is solving problems and supporting client needs in electrical testing and commissioning in utility substations, industrial, and bulk electrical power systems. 

  • Help support a range of testing and commissioning activities through application of client testing standards, industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NFPA, NESC), and manufacturer recommendations

  • Works under limited supervision, independently executing moderately complex assignments, and contributing to regulatory compliance, safety adherence, and data integrity across active job sites

  • Provides day-to-day support to field teams, helps resolve challenges on-site, and mentors junior technicians to promote quality, efficiency, and safe work practices

Your Impact

  • Perform assigned testing and commissioning tasks for Protection and Control systems on high voltage substations

  • Perform on-site hands-on protective relay testing using relay test sets such as Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150. Examples of relays to be tested are SEL-311L, SEL-387, SEL-487, SEL-421, SEL-351S, GE L90, GE D60 among others

  • Use field forms, digital data tools, and mobile applications to document site activities

  • Perform equipment cleaning, inventory control, and calibration as directed

  • Support the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects

  • Escalate complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager

  • Participate in daily safety briefings and ensure compliance with health and safety protocols

  • Communicate progress, field observations, and potential delays to the project team

  • May review the work of less experienced technicians for quality and accuracy, providing informal guidance as needed

  • Maintain attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries

  • Collaborate with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards

  • Assist in monitoring subcontractor performance and activities and report observations to field leadership

  • Perform clerical responsibilities such as timecards, expense reports, and project reports

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing

  • Some experience on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes

  • Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays

  • Intermediate experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards

  • Familiarity with testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays and circuit breakers

  • Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review

  • Experience with reading and understanding electrical drawings

  • Ability to identify routine field challenges and equipment issues, responding within established procedures and escalating atypical conditions

  • Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports

  • Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions

  • Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers

  • Demonstrated commitment to field safety, quality, and regulatory compliance

  • Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills for field team collaboration

  • Capable of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results

  • Capability to support a wide variety of tasks in dynamic or changing environments

  • Ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines, and maintain accountability in the field

  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical behavior in technical environments

  • Reliable, punctual, with the ability to work independently or with a team

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies

  • Willingness and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually, and up to 100 pounds with assistance

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, basic color differentiation, and the ability to adjust focus

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

  • Must be willing to travel (up to 80%)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline

  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays

  • Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers

  • Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
