DEFINITION
Under general supervision, supervises pool patrons and instructs swimming classes as offered by the Azusa Community Resources Department. Instructor is responsible for the lesson plan of all assigned classes in coordination with the Pool Manager. Completion of all Red Cross and/or American Heart Association swim cards, registration forms and other duties as directed are required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbent may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address department needs and changing business practices.
Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to see that they are safe and usable.
Serves as a pool lifeguard.
Supervises the activities of users of pool facilities to enforce policies, rules, regulations, and safety.
May make chlorine residual and other water tests
May assist in cleaning and maintaining the pool and its equipment.
Adds chemicals to pool waters.
Administers first aid.
Maintains friendly relations with users of the pool and surrounding park grounds.
Gives instruction in swimming and water safety.
Conducts parent swim night and any additional special events
Acts as novice swim team coach or assistant coach as assigned
May open or close pool facility in absence of Pool Manager, and act as Pool Manager.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Qualified candidates must be at least seventeen (17) years of age
with a work permitAND have one (1) year of aquatics experience in a municipal or commercial setting is required. Must possess a
valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguarding Certificate. An American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer or similar certifications from the American Heart Association are also acceptable. A T.B. clearance is required.
Allcertificationsmust be current andobtained by the time of hire.A tuberculosis clearance is required as part of the pre-employment physical and background process.
Interview Schedule
Qualified Candidates will be contacted for an Interview and In-Water Exercise for the appointment times listed below:
1st Round: Saturday, April 18, 2026
2nd Round:Saturday. May 2, 2026
Interviews will consist of an In-Water-Exercise, which will consist of:- 300 yard swim combo of freestyle, breaststroke, and sidestroke;
- Successfully pass a 5 minute tread water exercise; and
- Successfully lift 50lbs upon physical background examination.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Must be available to work split shifts, weekdays, weekends and nights.
- This position is for the 2026 Summer Aquatics Program.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States and have reliable transportation to and from work.
