The Inspection Technician performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters at residential and commercial properties to identify corrosion, damage, and potential safety issues. This entry-level role combines customer interaction, mechanical aptitude, and detailed documentation to support regulatory compliance and public safety initiatives. The position requires extensive walking, driving within the service territory, and working outdoors in all weather conditions while maintaining a professional demeanor in customers’ homes.

Work Environment
This is a 100% field-based position within a utility service territory primarily covering Brooklyn and Queens. Inspection Technicians travel daily using their own vehicles to report to job sites, typically starting the day by receiving a list of addresses and route information on a handheld tablet. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday shifts available at the supervisor’s request and at the technician’s discretion. The role involves extensive walking, stair climbing, and ladder use, as well as working outdoors in all weather conditions and entering customers’ homes. Tailboard meetings occur at warehouse locations in Queens or Brooklyn. The work environment is structured around safety and compliance, with an intensive initial training program that includes an OSHA-focused orientation, classroom instruction, homework and practice exams, certification testing, and a probationary period during the first 90 days to assess performance and competency. After passing exams, technicians job shadow in the field before working independently. The company provides all necessary tools and safety equipment, including a simple tool set, flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet, flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. Communication with supervisors regarding attendance and scheduling is expected to be timely and professional.
