Information Technology Technician

The County of San Luis Obispo’s Information Technology Department is seeking an IT Technician for the IT Support team. This position will primarily provide support for the Countywide Service Desk.

About the Opportunities

We are looking for multi-skilled candidates with technical support experience to support County users across all departments. The IT Technician will provide the first contact for support needs and will need a broad range of technical and interpersonal skills. This position is responsible to field incoming telephone calls and emails, apply troubleshooting skills, and attempt to resolve customer issues. When it is necessary to escalate support tickets, it is expected that thorough documentation is included and that tickets are routed to the proper team.

Technical Support Experience–the ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with supporting the following tasks and technologies:

• Exposure to or foundational knowledge of IT support concepts (coursework, certifications, internships, or prior help desk experience)
• Basic understanding of computer hardware, Windows OS, and common software applications (e.g., Microsoft 365)
• Familiarity with basic troubleshooting steps for common issues (password resets, connectivity issues, application errors)
• Strong interest in developing technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Ability to follow documented procedures, knowledge base articles, and step-by-step instructions
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, especially when assisting non-technical users
• Ability to accurately document issues, steps taken, and resolutions in a ticketing system
• Strong attention to detail when gathering information before escalating issues
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple requests in a fast-paced environment
• Willingness to learn how to triage issues and route tickets to appropriate teams
• Customer service mindset with a focus on responsiveness, professionalism, and empathy
• Familiarity with or willingness to learn tools such as ticketing systems and remote support software
• Basic understanding of account access concepts (e.g., password resets, account lockouts)

Minimum Qualifications:

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

Either A: Equivalent to the completion of an Associate Degree with major coursework in computer science, information technology, or a related field. OR B: Certificate in Information Technology (CIT) or equivalent AND one year of experience involving the applications and operations of computer equipment.Licenses and Certificates

Certain positions within this classification may require driving. When driving is an essential function of the position, a validCALIFORNIAdriver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employees may be required to respond to after-normal workday or irregular and on-call emergency requests on nights, weekends and holidays.
