Sr. Principal R&D Scientist
Location: Richmond, VA (Onsite)

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Sr. Principal R&D Scientist to lead laboratory process transformation and operational excellence initiatives across Analytical Sciences, Foundational Chemistry, R&D, and Manufacturing Quality laboratories. This role focuses on improving laboratory productivity, defining and implementing performance metrics, and driving data‑driven improvements in regulated, multi‑site lab environments.
The ideal candidate brings strong hands‑on laboratory experience combined with proven success in workflow optimization, metrics development, and cross‑functional leadership.
Key Responsibilities
End‑to‑End Process Transformation
- Lead process transformation initiatives across production, R&D, and quality laboratories while supporting ongoing business‑as‑usual (BAU) operations
- Map current‑state laboratory capabilities, workflows, and service models
- Identify operational gaps, inefficiencies, redundancies, and improvement opportunities
Critical Skills & Experience
- Strong scientific and technical background in Analytical Sciences, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related fields
- Proven experience in laboratory process transformation and operational excellence
- Strong data analytics capability, including defining, tracking, and interpreting KPIs
- Experience with digital lab systems (LIMS, ELN, dashboards, or data visualization tools)
- Ability to lead and influence cross‑functional, multi‑site teams
- Solid understanding of regulated laboratory environments (FDA, ISO, GLP/GMP) with a strong quality and compliance focus
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Microbiology, Analytical Sciences, or related discipline
- Minimum 5–10 years of hands‑on laboratory experience in a regulated environment (pharmaceutical, consumer products, or similar)
OR associate’s degree in a life science discipline with 15+ years of laboratory experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Sciences, Microbiology, or related field
- Experience in tobacco, nicotine, aerosol, or other highly regulated consumer product testing
- Hands‑on experience with analytical instrumentation (e.g., chromatography, spectroscopy, automated lab systems)
- Demonstrated success leading multi‑site initiatives or large‑scale lab optimization programs
Working Environment & Physical Requirements
- Onsite laboratory work in controlled environments requiring PPE (lab coat, safety glasses, etc.)
- Fast‑paced work environment with high productivity expectations
- Ability to stand, walk between labs, and remain stationary for extended periods
- Regular use of laboratory instruments and tools, including bending, reaching, and lifting
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs. (up to 50 lbs. infrequently)
- Exposure to potential laboratory hazards, including biological materials and hazardous chemicals
- May be required to complete medical clearance, respiratory protection training, and fit testing
