Position Summary

The New Construction HVAC Journeyman is responsible for the skilled installation, troubleshooting, and commissioning of HVAC systems on residential and commercial construction projects. This role requires extensive technical expertise, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to mentor apprentices and support the installation team to ensure quality workmanship and timely project completion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced installation of HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, controls, and mechanical equipment, on new construction sites
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to ensure accurate system layout
  • Install, test, and calibrate HVAC equipment, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications and building codes
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices and junior installers
  • Inspect work for quality, completeness, and code compliance
  • Collaborate with project managers, general contractors, and other trades to ensure smooth project execution
  • Maintain a safe and organized job site, following OSHA standards and company safety policies
  • Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and specialized installation equipment
  • Document work completed, materials used, and any deviations or issues encountered
  • Troubleshoot and resolve installation challenges effectively
  • Provide professional customer service when interacting with clients or other trades
  • Participate in ongoing training, safety meetings, and technical skill development
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Completion of HVAC apprenticeship or equivalent experience
  • 3–5+ years of experience in HVAC installation on new construction projects
  • Proven ability to work independently and lead team members on-site


Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • EPA Section 608 Certification (required if working with refrigerants)
  • Additional certifications (NATE, manufacturer-specific, hydronics, or control systems) are preferred


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of HVAC systems, ductwork, piping, controls, and equipment installation
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to train and mentor apprentices and junior team members
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Knowledge of safety standards, building codes, and compliance requirements
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and specialized installation equipment


Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds or more
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, climb ladders or scaffolding, and work at heights
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and on elevated platforms
  • Ability to work in varying indoor and outdoor conditions


Work Environment

  • Residential and commercial construction job sites
  • Exposure to dust, noise, temperature extremes, and mechanical equipment
  • Field-based work with frequent travel between job sitesSchedule
  • Typically Monday through Thursday
  • Overtime, weekends, or extended hours may be required to meet project deadlines


Travel Requirements

  • Local travel within the assigned service territory
  • Occasional regional travel may be required for larger projects

  • Complete installations according to company quality standards, building codes, and project specifications
  • Mentor apprentices and support team development
  • Maintain high levels of safety, productivity, and customer satisfaction
  • Complete, accurate, and timely documentation of work performed
