Histology Technician/Technologist
Job Description
The Histology Technologist performs routine and specialized procedures on patient tissue specimens to prepare them for accurate pathological examination. This role involves conducting and verifying laboratory testing, maintaining high standards of quality control, and ensuring reliable results that support timely diagnosis and patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine histology procedures on patient tissue specimens, including tissue fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining to prepare slides for pathological evaluation.
- Perform special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures as required to support detailed diagnostic interpretation.
- Conduct testing on tissue specimens, interpret results, and verify the accuracy and completeness of reported findings.
- Adjust effectively to fluctuating workloads, managing priorities and turnaround times in a busy clinical laboratory environment.
- Perform and document quality control procedures on instruments, reagents, and processes to ensure compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory requirements.
- Identify, document, and resolve out-of-control quality situations, including recording details, results, and corrective actions taken.
- Perform appropriate corrective actions when test systems, instruments, or quality control results indicate issues, and document all interventions clearly and accurately.
- Follow established laboratory procedures, protocols, and safety guidelines for all histology and immunohistochemistry processes.
- Perform and document instrument maintenance and function checks to ensure reliable operation of histology and related laboratory equipment.
- Collaborate with laboratory colleagues and pathology staff to support efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation related to testing, quality control, maintenance, and corrective actions.
- Support laboratory operations in areas related to histology, pathology, and clinical laboratory services as needed.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in core histology techniques, including tissue fixation, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining.
- Ability to perform and interpret routine and special stains, including immunohistochemistry procedures.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory operations within a histopathology, clinical, veterinary, industry, or research laboratory setting.
- Ability to perform, interpret, and verify laboratory test results with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Competence in performing and documenting quality control procedures and taking appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to recognize and document out-of-control quality situations and follow through with resolution.
- Skill in performing and documenting instrument maintenance and function checks.
- Effective time management skills with the ability to adapt to fluctuating workloads and meet required turnaround times.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- ASCP certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) is strongly preferred.
- 1 year of experience working as a Histology Technician/Technologist
- Ability to work collaboratively within a unionized laboratory environment that supports defined career ladders and professional growth.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Demonstrated reliability and professionalism in maintaining documentation, following procedures, and adhering to regulatory standards.
Work Environment
This is a fully onsite role in Wauwatosa, WI. Schedule is Monday-Friday. No weekend requirements.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $46113.60 - $76960.00/yr.
