Highway Maintenance Worker II: Heavy Equipment Operator (61031961)

Operates and maintains heavy motorized equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader, and motor graders during the installation of driveways; sideline and cross line pipes for storm water drainage and access to property, constructing and repairing drainage structures, and cleaning ditches. Operates and maintains equipment such as dump truck, asphalt kettle, roller, power broom and forklift that are used during driveway paving operations and hauling asphalt from the plant throughout Colleton County. Operates and maintain a tandem or 5-yard dump truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, light weight aggregate, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Operates motor grader in ditching, shoulder operations, grading and machining roads, or snow and ice removal. Operates a large backhoe and front end loader for clearing fallen trees and debris from roadway during various maintenance operations. Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs and raised medians, laying pipes for driveways and removal of litter and debris, clearing right-of-ways, repairing bridges, patching potholes, base surface failures on roadways, assisting with paving and chip seal operation. Sets up traffic control according to SCMUTCD Standards to warn motorists of roadwork ahead, and assist with on-call for after hour emergencies. Operates various pieces of equipment in snow and ice removal as necessary and emergencies. Operates and maintain hand/power, electrical and gas powered tools such as shovel, pick, rake, asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed, chain saw to cut trees, pruner, weed eater, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement: Works outside in heavy traffic and all weather conditions. Subject to dust, excessive noise and traffic hazards for extended periods of time. Requires heavy lifting up to and occasionally exceeding 50 lbs, standing stooping, bending, and physical strain. Works overtime as necessary. Other physical requirements needed to perform job duties are: walking, climbing, balancing, pulling, kneeling and repetitive motions.
