MajorDuties

  • As a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC (Title 32), WG-5803-10, you will maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, modify, and inspect heavy mobile equipment, various support equipment, and special purpose vehicles such as; fuel dispensing trucks, refueling equipment, crash/structural firefighting equipment and pump trucks, forklifts, materiel handling, aircraft cargo loaders, aircraft and equipment tow tractors, large runway snow removal vehicles, aircraft de-icing equipment, sweepers, bulldozers, mobile cranes, road graders, heavy construction and earth moving vehicles, backhoes, front end loaders, excavators, trenchers, and tactical/armored protected vehicles. Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list: Perform repair, adjust, overhaul, and major maintenance on heavy mobile equipment and special-purpose vehicles. Inspect, repair, overhaul, and test major systems including gasoline, diesel, electric-hybrid, multi-fuel, turbine, and internal combustion engines. Remove, disassemble, overhaul, modify, adjust, and repair engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies in accordance with procedures and specifications. Reassemble engines, transmissions, and sub-assemblies, perform adjustments, conduct tests, and reinstall systems in vehicles and equipment. Perform body repair and corrosion control, including refinishing and repainting of vehicle surfaces. Use specialized diagnostic, scan, and computer-controlled test equipment to troubleshoot complex electric and electronic systems. Develop or improvise repair methods, alter parts, or fabricate modifications when technical guidelines are absent or insufficient. Modify parts to fit or perform equipment modifications to correct recurring malfunctions or meet special requirements. Perform welding, refinishing, corrosion control, and body restoration using power tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment. Conduct design modifications, make precise adjustments, or perform operational tests to validate serviceability. Analyze malfunctions and determine causes of mechanical failure using visual, auditory, and diagnostic information. Interpret technical orders, maintenance manuals, commercial publications, and shop instructions to determine required repairs. Review and update maintenance technical orders, shop operating instructions, MAJCOM directives, and local publications. Determine extent of repairs or adjustments necessary by interpreting results from test equipment and operational checks. Evaluate instructional methods and training effectiveness to maintain accurate training and qualification records. Use engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and other diagnostic tools to troubleshoot faults. Determine serviceability of repaired vehicles by performing operational driving tests. Inspect, maintain, and operate shop equipment, support tools, and special-purpose maintenance equipment. Test, service, and repair radiators, oil coolers, vehicle A/C systems, wheel and tire assemblies, and associated vehicle components. Research, requisition, and maintain adequate shop stock, special-level parts, and maintenance materials to support the mission.

Education

This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade listed in the announcement. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position. Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
