Performs difficult manual work operating heavy equipment transporting materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, dirt and bituminous paving mix; maintaining gravel road district, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.   • Operates an end loader and loads materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, dirt, and bituminous paving mix on heavy tandem, straight truck and/or semi-tractor/trailer rig for transporting and spreading.
  • Drives a heavy tandem, straight truck and/or semi-tractor/trailer rig and hauls equipment or materials to/from construction, maintenance, and/or repair site.
  • May, on occasion, operate other specialized equipment such as crane, back hoe, excavator, sheeps foot, dozer, pulled scoop, brush chopper, mower/tractor, or roller tractor to accomplish specific assignments such as lay culverts, regrade/repair damaged roads, and drive bridge piling.
  • Mounts one-way, reversible snow plow, wings, and/or V-plow on truck or motor grader; drives truck or motor grader, manipulates plow controls, and removes snow and ice from assigned roads.
  • Installs spreader on truck; drives truck, manipulates spreader controls, and spreads a sand/salt or chip application on snowy, icy roads.
  • Performs routine mechanical servicing tasks on the equipment operated such as change/repair tires, apply knowledge of oil type and change oil, lubricate/grease, change lights and fuses, attach/remove tire chains and plow blades; assists trained mechanic(s) with major mechanical tasks such as removal and overhaul of engine, transmission, clutch, and brakes.
  • Performs routine manual labor tasks, as required, such as shovel dirt, cut and remove brush, pour and smooth concrete, install/remove/clean culverts, sign repair or replacement, work on bridge/culvert repair crew, pavement patching.
  • May operate appropriate equipment and apparatus and apply pesticide as directed.8)
  • Applies knowledge of account codes and maintains routine logs such as acuminate repair/maintenance record, fuel consumption, daily work done, and so on.
  • May operate dump trucks with pup trailer, tractor/trailer combination, vehicle hauling rock or heavy equipment, motor grader.
  • Maintains clean work area in assigned shed such as sweep floor and other custodial duties; performs building maintenance as necessary.

Thorough knowledge of the practices of road construction, repair and maintenance; thorough knowledge in the operation of heavy equipment and other specialized equipment; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions; thorough knowledge in county and state traffic laws; ability to operate equipment such as a dozer, grader, excavator, dragline, backhoe, endloader, and/or semi-tractor/trailer rig; ability to apply road construction, repair and maintenance methods and practices; ability to read maps and drawings; ability to understand and implement oral and written instructions; ability to formulate safe operational policies and procedures; ability to maintain records and activity reports; ability to operate standard tools and equipment of the trades; ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software; ability to train others on the safe and efficient operation of given tools, equipment and software; ability to supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and the general public.
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience working with equipment operation, such as snow removal or dirt work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License RequiredPhysical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and lifting; no special vision is required; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

Environmental Conditions This work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places and exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
