The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic 4 in our Eastern Region. This position serves as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 4 and Supervisor, responsible for overseeing TEF shop operations in Spokane, Colfax, Davenport, and Colville. This position supports the TEF mission and regional equipment operations by providing leadership, technical expertise, and operational oversight to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery.
What to Expect
Typical schedule is 4 -10-hour shifts, 40 hours per week; there are emergent situations that can require weekends and holidays to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. Must be able to report in service to the assigned duty station within 1 hour of an after-hours call.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic 4 will:
- Supervise Heavy Equipment Mechanics who conduct repairs, preventative maintenance, and parts procurement of regional and statewide equipment in the Eastern region.
- Coordinate regularly with the Main Shop Supervisor regarding field shop projects that need to be conducted through the Main Shop.
- Supervise, coach, and provide clear directions to TEF staff who support Maintenance and Operations in Spokane, Colfax, Davenport, and Colville. Oversee performance through shared visions, values, and accountability. Work with subordinates to establish group identity throughout the region’s core values, consistent practices, and structure.
- Generate and provide cost estimates to equipment organizational managers for user-funded jobs and projects. Products, audits, maintains, and changes work orders and data within the Fleet Equipment Management System. Generate various equipment repair, labor, and parts-related reports from M5 for auditing and efficiency purposes.
- Perform annual performance evaluations of shop employees and provide feedback and coaching in areas where they need improvement and growth. Recognize and acknowledge good performance.
- Assist the Equipment Superintendent in ordering and purchasing new equipment for the region. Inspect new equipment upon arrival.
- Acts in the absence of the Equipment Superintendent, to include occasional review and approving invoices in PCMS.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

- Technical Expertise:Advanced knowledge of equipment repair, diagnostics, and maintenance, including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Problem Solving:Ability to evaluate complex issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner.
- Communication:Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical and operational information clearly.
- Planning Coordination:Ability to prioritize, schedule, and coordinate work across multiple locations and competing demands.
- Performance Management:Experience conducting evaluations, addressing performance concerns, and supporting employee development.
- Safety Leadership:Knowledge of workplace safety practices and the ability to enforce compliance and respond to incidents.
- Technology & Systems:Experience in using fleet management systems (e.g., M5), diagnostic tools, and reporting software.
- Experience:Demonstrated experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment in a field or shop environment. Experience leading, directing, or coordinating the work of others in equipment maintenance or repair activities.Proven ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve mechanical and operational equipment issues. Experience applying technical or vocational training in heavy equipment systems and repair practices.
- Driver’s License:A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Technical Repair & Diagnostic Proficiency: Demonstrated advanced skills in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Applied technical training from structured apprenticeship or equivalent hands-on advanced technical development programs. Proficiency in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on heavy equipment
- Professional Certifications & Technical Credentials: Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications or equivalent industry-recognized certifications. Demonstrated commitment to maintaining current technical certifications relevant to automotive or heavy equipment systems
- Licensing & Operational Compliance: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and ability to operate applicable fleet and heavy equipment in compliance with safety standards
- Leadership & Team Coordination: Experience supervising, leading, or directing work activities of a shop or field maintenance team. Ability to coordinate tasks, assign work, and ensure quality and safety standards are met
- Fleet & Public Sector Operations Experience: Experience working within fleet maintenance, fleet operations, or public sector maintenance environments. Familiarity with operational standards, procedures, and accountability practices in government or large-scale fleet settings.
