Position Description
Reporting to the Manager, Safety, the HSE Technician provides technical and operational support to the Mercer Mass Timber (MMT) Conway facility to ensure the safety and health of our employees and the protection of the environment. This role supports the implementation of safety programs, compliance with regulatory standards, and the tracking of key performance indicators (KPIs) at our Conway, AR factory.
The HSE Technician will monitor and validate that HSE programs are effectively integrated across the production of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), Glulam (GL), and other mass timber products. Key responsibilities include providing proactive coaching and mentoring to staff, verifying program implementation, and supporting the factory’s mission through consistent hazard assessment and reporting.
The role requires flexibility, including participation in shift work. While experience is valued, the focus is on finding a candidate who is eager to learn and grow within our safety culture.
Responsibilities
- Spends significant time on the factory floor building trust-based relationships and communicating daily HSE focus areas to staff.
- Ensures the safety and well-being of all employees, contractors, and visitors while leading by example to promote a proactive safety culture.
- Proactively coaches the workforce on hazard identification, mitigation, and the proper implementation of Task Hazard Analyses (THA).
- Assists the HSE Manager in developing, executing, and improving safety programs and tools across the factory.
- Validates program effectiveness through routine site walks, checklists, audits, and regular documentation reviews.
- Monitors and evaluates Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements and conducts safety training as needed.
- Collects data to support the analysis on incident rates and trends to drive continuous improvement and resolution.
- Supports incident management processes, including notifications, drug and alcohol programs, triage, and return-to-work protocols.
- Support environmental compliance and health programs, including stormwater monitoring, air reporting, and sampling.
- Participates as an active member of the Safety Committee and supports the execution of safety meetings.
- Collaborates with factory leadership, training coordinators, and consultants to align MMT initiatives and ensure consistent safety strategies.
- Assists with the documentation and closure of corrective actions following safety incidents or audits.

Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience in safety, environmental science, engineering, or a related industrial field.
- Knowledge of HSE regulations, including OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, EPA, and DOT standards is considered an asset.
- The ability to influence and foster a proactive safety culture and drive compliance.
- Excellent communication, both verbal and written, and organizational skills, with a focus on planning, prioritization, and follow-up.
- Data-driven problem solver with proficiency in Google Workspace.
- Collaborative and adaptable, comfortable managing shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Salary & Benefits
- The hourly base pay range for this position is $25-28 USD and will be commensurate with education and experience.
