Head of Professional Services

Redda Group has been retained to find a Head of Professional Services to build and lead the PS delivery organization while providing administrative oversight of the engineering team. This person will own PS profitability, utilization, project governance, and reporting. You will build the team, build the PMO discipline, and build the reporting infrastructure that a growing VAR-to-services company needs to scale without losing its engineering identity.
Our client is a cybersecurity and network infrastructure engineering firm serving Federal Civilian, Higher Education, and SLED markets. The company combines value-added resale with a deep in-house engineering practice, delivering professional services across leading enterprise security and networking platform. This growing firm needs someone, capable of building the operational infrastructure to scale the PS business into its next chapter.
Key Responsibilities
PS Operations and Profitability
- Billable utilization across the engineering pool.
- Project-level gross margin tracking (T&M targets and, Fixed-Price.
- Revenue realization rate monitoring and root cause analysis.
- Capacity forecasting at 30/60/90-day horizons to drive hiring, subcontracting, and bench management decisions.
- PS backlog health: maintaining 3-6 months of contracted-but-undelivered revenue.
PMO and Project Governance
- Standardized project delivery framework: milestone tracking, earned value management (CPI/SPI), scope change controls.
- Reporting cadence: monthly utilization report, weekly executive KPI snapshot, project-level health dashboards.
- Work type classification enforcement in the PSA platform (Billable-PS, Billable-Support, Pre-Sales, Internal, Admin, Bench).
- On-time delivery rate, milestone completion rate, and backlog aging management.
- SOW quality and scoping discipline, particularly on fixed-price engagements.
Engineering Oversight (Administrative)
- Resource allocation and staffing decisions across active projects, support contracts, and pre-sales requests.
- Engineer performance management: utilization accountability, skills development, and career pathing.
- Coordination with Executive Leadership on hiring, contractor conversions, and subcontractor management.
- Ensuring pre-sales engineering hours are tagged to opportunity IDs and flow into deal-level P&L as Cost of Acquisition.
Client Delivery and Relationships
- Executive sponsor for key client engagements across Federal, Higher Education, and commercial accounts.
- Escalation point for delivery issues, scope disputes, and client satisfaction concerns.
- Partner with sales on pre-sales scoping to ensure SOW accuracy and margin protection.
- Support-to-PS conversion: identify support engagements that should be scoped as new PS work.
Required Experience
- 7+ years leading a PS organization at a VAR, MSP, systems integrator, or technology services firm.
- Direct experience managing utilization as a primary KPI, including defining and enforcing the formula, denominator, and reporting cadence.
- Track record of building or significantly maturing a PMO inside a company that was transitioning from ad hoc project management to standardized governance.
- Experience managing a mixed team of PMs and engineers (W-2 and 1099).
- Proficiency with PSA tools (OpenAir, ConnectWise, Autotask, or similar).
- Hands-on experience with earned value management in practice, not just theory.
- Demonstrated ability to own project-level and practice-level P&L with direct accountability for margin outcomes.
- Client-facing executive presence: ability to represent delivery capability, manage escalations, and participate in QBRs.
Preferred Experience
- Background in cybersecurity and/or network infrastructure services (enterprise security and networking platforms).
- Experience serving Federal Civilian and/or Higher Education / SLED clients.
- Familiarity with ERP and PSA platforms for financial reporting and time/project management.
- Experience with government contract vehicles, SEWP, GSA Schedule, or BPA structures.
- Prior experience at a company in the $20-100M revenue range with a lean operating model.
Tools and Systems
The company uses industry-standard PSA, ERP, CRM, and collaboration platforms. You will be expected to drive data quality and reporting discipline across these systems.
Compensation
- Comp: $180K–$220K base + ~15% bonus
